Description

Pouākai is the ridge of a heavily eroded Pleistocene stratovolcano standing northwest of Mount Taranaki within Egmont National Park (Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki), New Zealand. It is best known for the Pouakai Tarns — small alpine pools where the Taranaki cone reflects perfectly on a calm day, one of the most iconic vistas in New Zealand. Two popular tracks cross it: the full-day Pouakai Crossing and the two-to-three-day Pouakai Circuit, which pass through goblin forest, the Ahukawakawa wetland, and alpine tussock. The surrounding ring plain was built from lahar deposits of a major collapse roughly 250,000 years ago.

Routes

Pouakai Circuit

Jalur tramping (berat); musim dingin menuntut keterampilan ice axe/crampon
25.00 km 2–3 hari

A ~25 km loop starting and finishing at the North Egmont Visitor Centre through forest, alpine tussock and the Ahukawakawa wetland with two serviced huts (Holly Hut and Pouakai Hut). It crosses rockfall zones including Boomerang Slip, with a side trip to Bells Falls (Te Rere-o-Tahurangi).

Pouakai Crossing

Jalur tramping tingkat lanjut; butuh kebugaran baik & perlengkapan alpin
19.00 km 1 hari (~7,5–9,5 jam)

A one-way ~19 km alpine day tramp through Egmont National Park, passing goblin forest, the Ahukawakawa wetland, the Pouakai Tarns and tussock ridges with views of Mount Taranaki. Best walked December–April as higher sections can carry snow and ice; extreme weather is common.

Climbing Experiences

Nearly every trip report centres on the Pouakai Tarns and the reflection of Mount Taranaki in the pools. Hikers describe the tiring staircases and boardwalk, weather that can make or break the reflection, and the choice between a single-day Crossing or an overnight hut-based Circuit. The consensus: on a calm day the view is among the most spectacular in New Zealand.
