Description

Pokalde, also called Dolma Ri (5,806 m), is a non-volcanic summit in Nepal’s Khumbu, roughly 12 km southwest of Everest. In relatively dry conditions the climb mostly involves walking and rocky scrambling, but the exposed finish is more demanding than an ordinary trek. The north ridge from Kongma La was the first-ascent route in 1953; approaches on the Makalu side are also used. Cathy Luchetti’s October 2006 account illustrates how much conditions can vary: her party encountered deep snow and roped climbing during a long summit day. Its reputation as a comparatively easy trekking peak therefore does not guarantee easy conditions in every season.

The 1953 first-ascent line follows the ridge from Kongma La towards Pokalde. The rocky, exposed finish calls for rope protection appropriate to the party and conditions. This ridge should not automatically be treated as the easiest line.

Trek Himalayan describes a northeast-face alternative from east of Kongma La, crossing broken rock and snow to the summit ridge. Its itinerary places base camp before the summit-and-descent day to Chhukung and includes a weather contingency day.

Climbing Experiences

The five videos document Pokalde and an unnamed pre-peak; the pre-peak clip does not establish an ascent of the main summit. Cathy Luchetti’s written account adds an October 2006 experience involving deep snow, ropes and a 14-hour climbing day. It describes that party’s conditions, rather than a standard duration or present route conditions.
