Description

Point Lenana (4,985 m) is the third-highest summit of the Mount Kenya massif in Kenya and the highest point reachable without technical climbing. The two higher peaks, Batian (5,199 m) and Nelion (5,188 m), are eroded volcanic-plug remnants that demand genuine rock climbing, so the great majority of the national park's many thousands of annual visitors head for Point Lenana instead. The ascent is normally a multi-day trek by one of three main routes — Sirimon, Naro Moru, or Chogoria — passing through forest, moorland, and alpine zones with relict glaciers, tarns, and distinctive flora such as giant groundsels and lobelias, alongside wildlife like rock hyrax. The decisive stage is a pre-dawn push from a high camp (Shipton's or Austrian Hut) to reach the summit at sunrise. Sitting on the equator yet approaching 5,000 m, the main challenge is not technical difficulty but altitude and cold, making gradual acclimatization essential. Mount Kenya itself is an extinct volcano; its three peaks are the exposed magmatic core left after the outer cone eroded away over millions of years.

Routes

Jalur Chogoria

Trekking sedang (non-teknis); jalur paling indah
4–6 hari (kerap dipakai sebagai traverse dengan Sirimon)

Considered the most scenic route, approaching from the east past waterfalls, gorges, Lake Michaelson, and alpine valleys before joining the summit circuit to Point Lenana. Many trekkers ascend via Sirimon and descend by Chogoria (or vice versa) to enjoy both sides of the mountain.

Jalur Naro Moru

Trekking sedang tetapi lebih curam; tercepat, risiko AMS lebih tinggi
3–4 hari

The fastest and most direct route from the west, famous for the boggy 'Vertical Bog', climbing quickly to Mackinder's Camp and then Point Lenana. Because its speed raises altitude-sickness risk, it is more often used for the descent than the ascent.

Jalur Sirimon

Trekking sedang (non-teknis); paling baik untuk aklimatisasi
4–5 hari

The most popular ascent route, approaching from the northwest with a gentle gradient through forest, moorland, and the Mackinder Valley to Shipton's Camp. Its easy gradient gives the best acclimatization before the pre-dawn push to Point Lenana, and it is often paired with Chogoria as a traverse.

Climbing Experiences

Point Lenana is Mount Kenya's most popular climbing objective because it can be reached without rock climbing. The sources below range from summit vlogs and Chogoria–Sirimon traverse reports to a fast 24-hour attempt and operator guides — all converging on the same pattern: a multi-day trek through moorland and alpine zones, then a pre-dawn push to the summit at sunrise.
