Description

Pizzo Carbonara (1,979 m) is the highest peak of the Madonie mountains in Sicily and the island's second-highest summit after Mount Etna — only about two metres higher than its neighbour Pizzo Antenna. Set within the Parco delle Madonie, roughly 10 km northwest of Petralia Sottana, it is a limestone (karst) massif: rainwater falling here eventually re-emerges at the foot of the castle rock of Cefalù on Sicily's north coast. Its summit is more of a plateau than a peak, dotted with hundreds of doline (sinkholes), so the true high point is hard to pinpoint. In good weather it is readily climbed from the road-accessible Piano Battaglia (~1,605 m) through Madonie beech (faggeta) and holly forests. However, the path is not always clearly marked and the plateau is prone to mist, so a compass or GPS is strongly advised and winter ascents are discouraged.

Routes

Anello Pizzo Carbonara & Pizzo Scalonazzo (rute lingkar)

Sedang–EE: rute lingkar menggabungkan dua puncak; medan karst membingungkan saat kabut
9.40 km +390 m 5–6 jam (loop)

A loop variant from Piano Battaglia that combines Pizzo Carbonara with its neighbour Pizzo Scalonazzo, offering more varied views. Guides describe a loop of about 9.4 km with ~390 m of ascent on waymarks 551/555. It threads high beech forest and karst plateau dotted with hundreds of doline before returning to the start. Like the official route, there is no water on route and navigation demands care because the plateau terrain is easily confusing in poor visibility.

Route Segments

  1. 1

Piano Battaglia (~1615 m) → punggung menuju Pizzo Scalonazzo

    ⏱ 1,5–2 jam 1.900 mdpl

Ikuti tanda 551/555 melewati faggeta; medan karst mulai terbuka

  2. 2

    Pizzo Scalonazzo → Pizzo Carbonara (1979 m)

    ⏱ 1–1,5 jam 1.979 mdpl

Menyeberangi dataran berdoline antar-puncak; titik tertinggi sulit dipastikan

  3. 3

Puncak → turun kembali ke Piano Battaglia

    ⏱ 2–2,5 jam 1.615 mdpl

Menutup rute lingkar; navigasi kompas/GPS penting bila kabut turun

Jalur Resmi dari Piano Battaglia

EE (Escursionisti Esperti / pendaki berpengalaman): non-teknis tetapi jalur tak selalu bertanda dan dataran puncak rawan kabut
11.40 km +364 m ~4 jam naik, ~3 jam turun

The official route to Pizzo Carbonara's summit starts from Piano Battaglia (~1,615 m), a road-accessible point in the heart of the Parco delle Madonie. The path threads beech (faggeta) forest and high-mountain pasture, then climbs onto the karst summit plateau dotted with hundreds of doline. The official itinerary lists about 5.7 km each way, ~364 m of ascent, ~4 h up and ~3 h down, rated EE. The climb involves no rock-climbing or scrambling, but the trail is not always clearly marked and the plateau-like summit is easily fogged in — a compass or GPS is strongly advised, and there is no water on route. Winter ascents are discouraged.

Route Segments

  1. 1

    Piano Battaglia (~1615 m) → tepi faggeta (~1750 m)

    ⏱ 45–60 menit 1.750 mdpl

Awal jalur melewati hutan beech Madonie; ikuti tanda jalur dengan cermat

  2. 2

Faggeta → padang altomontana / awal dataran karst (~1900 m)

    ⏱ 1–1,5 jam 1.900 mdpl

Keluar hutan ke padang tinggi; mulai muncul doline khas karst

  3. 3

Dataran karst → Puncak Pizzo Carbonara (1979 m)

    ⏱ 1–1,5 jam 1.979 mdpl

Titik tertinggi sulit ditentukan di plateau berdoline; navigasi kompas/GPS penting bila berkabut

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Pizzo Carbonara (1,979 m), the highest Madonie peak and Sicily's second-highest summit after Etna, is generally a non-technical day out from the road-accessible Piano Battaglia (~1,600–1,635 m). The path threads Madonie beech (faggeta) and holly forests onto a karst summit plateau dotted with hundreds of doline. Figures vary by variant: the official itinerary lists about 5.7 km per segment with ~364 m of ascent (~4 h up, ~3 h down) rated EE (for expert hikers), while loop guides give ~9.4 km. Hikers — mostly in Italian — stress there is no water on route, the trail is not always clearly marked, and the summit plateau is mist-prone, so a compass or GPS is strongly advised. Much content pairs the climb with Pizzo Scalonazzo or the Gole di Tiberio.
