Description
Piz Palü (3,899 m) is one of the most photographed and admired peaks of the Bernina Range, a large glaciated massif running west to east on the Swiss–Italian border. The massif has three main summits on a single ridge: the central (main) summit at 3,899 m in the canton of Graubünden, Piz Spinas to the west (3,823 m, the only one not ice-covered), and Piz Palü Orientale to the east (3,882 m). The name 'Palü' derives from the Latin palus, meaning a swamp, after the high pasture of Alpe Palü some 4 km to its east. Piz Palü's dramatic north face, rising above the Pers Glacier with its ice pillars and huge cornices, was the setting of the legendary 1929 silent film 'Die weiße Hölle vom Piz Palü' ('The White Hell of Piz Palü'), which cemented the mountain's mystique in mountain-cinema history. For alpinists, the traverse (Überschreitung) of the three summits from Diavolezza is considered one of the most aesthetically perfect snow-ridge lines in the Eastern Alps, while the Bumiller Pillar (Bumillergrat) — an ice spur on the north face leading to the central summit — is a demanding classic. The main base is the Diavolezza Hut (2,978 m), reached by gondola from the Upper Engadin valley.

Routes
Rute Normal dari Diavolezza via Gletser Pers
Berat (Alpine PD; sepenuhnya glasial dengan punggung salju terpapar; wajib crampon, piolet, tali)The normal route on Piz Palü starts from the Diavolezza Hut (2,978 m), reached by gondola from the Bernina Suot station in the Upper Engadin — cutting out hundreds of metres of walking. From the hut, climbers descend to the Pers Glacier and cross it to the foot of the ridge rising to the summit. The route is entirely glacial: roping up is essential from the glacier because of crevasses, and the upper part is an exposed snow ridge to one of the three summits (usually the central summit at 3,899 m or Piz Palü Orientale at 3,882 m). The combination of gondola access and views of the Bernina massif makes it one of the most popular high routes in the Eastern Alps, a good introduction to 3,800–3,900 m peaks for climbers with glacier experience. Cornice and crevasse conditions vary each season; an early start is recommended.
Route Segments
- 1
Bernina Suot → Diavolezzahütte (2.978 m) via gondola
Gondola Diavolezza beroperasi musiman; kabin di stasiun atas, reservasi disarankan musim ramai
- 2

- 4
Turun via jalur yang sama ke Diavolezza
Balik menyeberangi Gletser Pers; salju melunak siang hari meningkatkan risiko celah
Überschreitung — Traverse Tiga Puncak dari Diavolezza
Berat (Alpine AD; punggung salju panjang terpapar di kedua sisi; cornice; wajib teknik gletser & jalan bertali)The Piz Palü traverse (Überschreitung) — crossing all three summits along the west–east ridge — is considered one of the most aesthetically perfect snow-ridge lines in the Eastern Alps. Starting from the Diavolezza Hut (2,978 m), climbers cross the Pers Glacier and gain the eastern ridge to Piz Palü Orientale (3,882 m), continue to the central summit (3,899 m), then toward Piz Spinas (3,823 m) before descending to Fuorcla Bellavista. The ridge is exposed on both sides with large cornices on the north face — the terrain that cemented the mountain's 'White Hell' reputation. Many climbers combine the traverse with the Bellavista and even Piz Bernina via the Marco e Rosa Hut (3,609 m) as a multi-day high-ridge tour. Snow and cornice conditions are decisive for safety; a fast pace matters before the snow softens.

Climbing Experiences
Piz Palü (3,899 m) is one of the most popular and iconic high-mountain routes in the Eastern Alps, thanks to a combination of modern access and dramatic glacial scenery. The Diavolezza gondola from the Upper Engadin valley lifts climbers straight to 2,978 m at the Diavolezza Hut, saving hundreds of metres of ascent. From there the normal route crosses the Pers Glacier to the snow ridge linking the three summits. The traverse (Überschreitung) of the three summits — from Diavolezza over Piz Palü Orientale, the central summit, to Fuorcla Bellavista — is considered one of the most aesthetically perfect snow-ridge lines in the Eastern Alps. For technical ice climbers, the Bumiller Pillar (Bumillergrat) on the north face to the central summit is a classic. The documentation below shows the traverse, the Diavolezza route, and a winter north-pillar ascent.
