Description

Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire (828 m), also called Black River Peak, is the highest point on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It is an erosional remnant of the ancient shield volcano that built the island, rising in the southwest within Black River Gorges National Park — the largest surviving tract of native rainforest in Mauritius. Despite being the island's roof, the climb is fairly short because the popular trails start from an already-high plateau (Plaine Champagne / Black River Gorges Viewpoint), typically about two hours to the top. The real challenge is the final steep section, often muddy and slippery, with a fixed rope at points. The summit rewards hikers with sweeping views over forested gorges, the west coast, and the distant Le Morne lagoon.

Routes

Jalur Machabée — dari utara

Berat (untuk ukuran gunung ini); jalur terpanjang dengan kenaikan terbesar
4.60 km +721 m 3–4 jam ke puncak

The longest and most demanding route, starting from the north near the headwaters of the Black River with a net gain of ~721 m. It cuts through the dense Machabée rainforest, giving a wilder experience for hikers seeking more challenge than the short plateau approach.

Climbing Experiences

The hike to Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, the highest point of Mauritius (828 m), typically takes 4–5 hours round trip and is considered beginner-friendly because it starts from an already-high plateau inside Black River Gorges National Park. Most of the trail is gentle and shaded through rainforest before turning into a steep, slippery, muddy climb at the foot of the peak — with a fixed rope on the final section. Hikers recommend well-gripping shoes, an early start, and avoiding very wet days. The reward is a 360° panorama of forested gorges, the west coast, and the Le Morne lagoon.
