Description

Piton d'Anchaing (local spelling: piton d'Anchain) is a 1,356 m peak rising in the very centre of the Cirque de Salazie on Réunion, a French overseas department in the south-western Indian Ocean. Geologists believe the piton slid down from the flank of the Gros Morne and came to rest on the floor of the cirque, leaving a distinctive isolated rock tower. Its name comes from the legend of Anchaing, an escaped slave (marron) who, with his wife Héva, is said to have taken refuge and lived atop this remote summit to escape slavery — a story that has made the mountain a symbol of maroon resistance on Réunion. Geologically it is not an active volcano but a remnant of the extinct, deeply eroded Piton des Neiges shield massif whose collapse carved the island's great cirques. The classic route starts at Îlet à Vidot near the historic village of Hell-Bourg, climbing steeply through forest to a nearly flat summit with sweeping views over the whole Cirque de Salazie. The area belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Pitons, cirques et remparts de l'île de La Réunion', though unusually it is not entirely within the national park's core zone.

The main — and effectively only — route to Piton d'Anchaing starts at Îlet à Vidot / Bras Marron, reached from the historic village of Hell-Bourg in the Cirque de Salazie. According to Randopitons it runs about 6.7 km round trip with roughly 670 m of gain and takes around 4 hours. The trail opens with a slavery/marronage interpretive section, then climbs steeply through forest to a nearly flat summit with a wide panorama over the whole cirque.

Climbing Experiences

Accounts of climbing Piton d'Anchaing stress three things: a short but steep trail from Îlet à Vidot (near Hell-Bourg), a strong marronage heritage — the summit carries the story of the escaped slaves Anchaing and Héva — and a 360° panorama over the whole Cirque de Salazie from its flat top. The vlogs, route guides and local write-ups below give a real sense of the trail and the climb.
