- 43.1178, 77.3413
- Difficulty
- Teknis (alpine salju-es). Jalur puncak paling umum dinilai kategori Rusia 3A: lereng timur dari gletser Korzhenevsky dengan kemiringan rata-rata sekitar 45° sepanjang ±500 m. Perlu pengalaman kramponn/ice axe, tali, dan penanganan crevasse

- Permits & Rules
Description
Pik Talgar (4,979 m) is the highest peak of the Trans-Ili Alatau (Ile Alatau), the northernmost range of the Tian Shan, rising directly south of Almaty, Kazakhstan. Its elevation is reported inconsistently — Soviet-era climbing literature and many local operators still quote 5,017 m, while modern figures used by Wikipedia and Wikidata give 4,979 m. The southern flank of the massif holds the Korzhenevsky glacier, the longest in the range at roughly 12 km, which underpins the classic summit route. The main summit was first climbed in 1938 by a team from Stalinsk (today Novokuznetsk). A mountaineering camp operated here from 1939 until around 1990 and left behind a dozen routes, from the 3A snow-and-ice line to hard west-face climbs. Unlike the tourist summits around Shymbulak, Talgar is not a trekking peak: approaches run long through the Left Talgar, Issyk or Turgen gorges and cross several high passes before reaching the glacier, so expeditions typically take about six days. Its proximity to Almaty keeps Talgar the most prestigious alpine objective in Kazakhstan.

Routes
Jalur klasik 3A: gletser Korzhenevsky → lereng timur
Kategori Rusia 3A (salju-es) — lereng timur dengan kemiringan rata-rata ±45° sepanjang sekitar 500 mThe standard route to Talgar's summit relies on the Korzhenevsky glacier on the southern side of the massif. Approaches run from several gorges — Turgen over the Palgov and Kokbulak passes, Middle Talgar over the Suroviy pass, the Talgarsky pass–Left Talgar–TEU pass–Suroviy pass chain, or Issyk over the Kokbulak pass — all converging on the Korzhenevsky glacier. From a glacier camp, the summit push climbs the eastern snow-and-ice slope at an average angle of about 45° over roughly 500 m. This is not a trekking route: rope, crampons and crevasse skills are required.
SourcePendekatan ngarai Talgar Kiri (Left Talgar) dari Almaty
Trekking sedang–berat (non-teknis) sampai batas gletser; di atas itu menjadi medan alpineThe Left Talgar gorge is the classic gateway from the Almaty side. The trail follows a long valley with traditional camping meadows and passes Solnechnaya Polyana (Sunny Glade, around 2,700 m), the best viewpoint towards the Talgar massif and its glaciers. Many walkers do this section as a trek in its own right without going for the summit; teams heading to the top link it onward over a high pass to the Korzhenevsky glacier. The lower part suits fit hikers without technical skills, but above the glacier line alpine equipment is essential.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Talgar is almost never a day climb: teams walk the long gorges south of Almaty, spend several nights on the glacier approach, then push for the summit up snow-and-ice slopes from the Korzhenevsky glacier. Russian-language expedition videos document the icefall approach, the high camps and the summit moments, while a freeride film shows Talgar's other face as a ski-mountaineering objective. The sources below record real experiences on the mountain.
