Description

Pigeon House Mountain — called Didthul by the Yuin people — is a prominent 720 m sandstone peak in the Budawang Range, within Morton National Park on the New South Wales South Coast. Its distinctive domed crown is visible from afar; the name "Pigeon House" was given by James Cook while sailing the coast in 1770, while the Aboriginal name Didthul refers to its silhouette. The climb, though only about 7.1 km return, is a challenging Grade 4 walk: a steep ascent through forest, heathland and ancient sandstone, finishing with a series of steel ladders that scale the rocky crown to the summit. From the top, walkers get sweeping views of the Budawang Wilderness, the Clyde River gorges and — on clear days — Jervis Bay and the coast. The area is rich in nature, including rare Pigeon House Ash eucalypts and a chance of spotting a lyrebird near the end of the track. Because of the steepness and ladders, it is safest tackled in dry weather.

Periksa alert taman sebelum berangkat.

Climbing Experiences

Shared accounts confirm Pigeon House Mountain / Didthul as one of the most iconic day climbs on the NSW South Coast. Vlogs and blogs repeatedly highlight the memorable finale: a series of steel ladders scaling the sandstone crown, and summit panoramas over the Budawang Wilderness and Clyde River gorges. Many describe the ~7 km track as short but steep and intense (Grade 4), suited to reasonably fit walkers. Common advice: carry water as there is none on the track, and choose dry weather so the ladders are not slippery.
