Description

Pietrosul Rodnei (2,303 m) is the highest peak of the Rodna Mountains and the highest point of the entire Eastern Carpathians in Romania. It forms the core of the Rodna Mountains National Park, an area recognized as a biosphere reserve for its rich alpine flora and fauna, including edelweiss, marmots, and chamois. Its landscape bears clear glacial imprints: rocky cirques, sharp ridges, and glacial lakes such as Lacul Iezer, a common rest point on the ascent. The most popular route sets out from the town of Borșa and Cabana Pietrosul, climbing past Lacul Iezer before following an open ridge to the summit, from which wide views open across the Rodna range and, on clear days, as far as the Maramureș mountains. Although it demands no technical climbing, the hike is long and physically taxing, with rapidly changing weather that makes acclimatization and preparation important.

Climbing Experiences

Pietrosul Rodnei, the highest point of the Eastern Carpathians, is usually climbed from Borșa via Lacul Iezer — a glacial lake often said to be shaped like the map of Romania. The sources below range from an ascent vlog from Schitul Pietroasa and a drone flight over the glacial valley to English-language hiking reports extending to the Buhăescu peak and a 17 km day-hike guide. All converge on the same pattern: up through forest and a forest road, past Lacul Iezer, then a steep rocky ridge to the summit. Every link was verified live before inclusion.
