Description

Pieter Both (820 m) is Mauritius's most iconic peak and the island's second highest after Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire. Part of the Moka Range rising above the capital Port Louis, it was born of volcanic activity around 8 million years ago and has since eroded into a slender tower crowned by a round boulder that appears to balance precariously on top — the feature that makes it instantly recognisable. It is named after Pieter Both, the first Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. The climb is no ordinary hike: the trail starts from the village of La Laura near St. Pierre, rising about two hours to the 'shoulder' below the peak, then a second stage up the slender summit neck involving scrambling, fixed ropes, a short ~5A climbing pitch, and a via ferrata to pass the overhanging section beneath the top boulder. The summit rewards climbers with panoramic island views, including a sweeping vista over Port Louis.

Routes

Pendakian berpemandu dengan alat (musim kering)

Teknis (butuh pengaman tali/harness)
Sehari (berpemandu)

Because Pieter Both's summit section cannot be reached without gear, the climb is generally done with a guide using harness and ropes, ideally in the dry season (~May–November) when the rock is not slippery. Local operators set protection on the climbing sections and the via ferrata beneath the summit boulder.

Climbing Experiences

Pieter Both is one of Mauritius's most popular and challenging climbs, so real sources are plentiful: many YouTube climbing vlogs (including 4K and drone footage) plus travel blogs detailing the two-stage ascent, fixed ropes and the via ferrata on the summit boulder.
