Description
Pico Ruivo (1,862 m) is the highest peak of Madeira Island and the highest point of the entire Madeira archipelago, Portugal. Set in the Maciço Central (Central Massif), it is the eroded remnant of an ancient, now-dormant basaltic shield volcano, ringed by dramatic ridges that often rise above a sea of clouds. There are two main ways to the top. The easiest is the PR1.2 trail (Vereda do Pico Ruivo) from the Achada do Teixeira car park: about 2.8 km one way on a paved stone path, typically 1.5 hours round trip, passing several shelters. The far more challenging and iconic route is the PR1 (Vereda do Areeiro), linking Pico do Areeiro (1,818 m) to Pico Ruivo along an exposed ridge full of stairs, rock tunnels and spectacular views — often called Madeira's best hike. Because the summit frequently sits above the clouds, hikers are advised to start very early to catch sunrise over the cloud sea.

Routes
PR1 Vereda do Areeiro — punggungan Pico do Areeiro → Pico Ruivo
Berat; punggungan terekspos, banyak tangga batu & terowongan, naik-turun tajamThe iconic and far more challenging route, frequently voted Madeira's best hike. The PR1 trail links Pico do Areeiro (1,818 m) to Pico Ruivo (1,862 m) over about 5.4 km one way along the dramatic Maciço Central ridge. The terrain is full of stone stairs, tunnels carved through cliffs, and exposed sections with drops on both sides — demanding fitness, a head for heights, and a torch for the tunnels. Many hikers do it one way with arranged pickup, or round trip if fit. Because the ridge often sits above the clouds, a pre-dawn start for sunrise is a classic experience. Check the trail status: PR1 was closed for a period after the 2024 wildfires.

Climbing Experiences
Pico Ruivo can be climbed in two very different ways. The easiest and most family-friendly is the PR1.2 from Achada do Teixeira: a paved stone path about 2.8 km one way, typically 1.5 hours round trip, passing several shelters before reaching Madeira's highest summit. The iconic and far more challenging route is the PR1 (Vereda do Areeiro), linking Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo along an exposed ridge full of stone stairs, tunnels and cliffs — frequently voted Madeira's best hike. Because the summit often sits above a sea of clouds, many hikers start pre-dawn to catch sunrise. Note that the PR1 was closed for a time after the 2024 wildfires, so always check the official trail status before setting out.
