Description

Pico dos Marins (~2,421 m) is one of the best-known peaks in the Serra da Mantiqueira, straddling the border between Piquete (São Paulo state) and Minas Gerais. It is a favourite of Brazil's trekking and mountaineering community, but its reputation is demanding: the route to the top crosses a series of 'bicos' or false summits with an exposed final section, while the Mantiqueira's characteristic thick fog can easily disorient hikers. Its fame grew after the story of scout Marco Aurélio, who got lost in 2012 and survived several days before being found—an event now cited as a warning not to climb without a guide. Ascents are usually made from the Piquete side with an intermediate camp (camping do meio), and experienced hikers often extend it as a traverse toward Pico do Itaguaré.
