Description
Pico de São Tomé (2,024 m) is the highest peak of São Tomé Island and the highest point of the nation of São Tomé and Príncipe. It is a dormant stratovolcano forming the core of Obô Natural Park, part of the Cameroon volcanic line in the Gulf of Guinea. Its slopes are cloaked in primary highland rainforest (cloud forest) that is almost perpetually misty and wet, rich in the endemic flora and fauna of an oceanic island. The climb is not technical but a push through steep, slippery, muddy, humid forest — usually done over 1–2 days with a night at the Pico Mesa camp (around 1,900 m). The two main trailheads are Bom Sucesso (botanical garden, ~1,100 m) and the lower Ponta Figo/Ribordelo. The best season is the dry gravana from June to September. The summit is a narrow, often cloud-wrapped ridge, and the whole trek stays within the Obô conservation area, making this one of Africa's most pristine tropical-forest ascents.

Routes
Bom Sucesso → Pico Mesa → Puncak (jalur utama)
Berat (hutan hujan primer curam, licin, berlumpur; non-teknis)The classic route to the summit from the Bom Sucesso botanical garden (~1,100 m) inside Obô Natural Park. The trail climbs through humid, misty cloud forest to the Pico Mesa camp (~1,900 m), then a short but steep final push along a narrow ridge to the 2,024 m summit. Usually done over two days with one night camping; a guide is recommended.
SourcePonta Figo / Ribordelo (jalur bawah alternatif)
Berat (jarak & tanjakan lebih panjang menembus hutan)An alternative approach from the western side via Ponta Figo/Ribordelo at a lower elevation (~450 m), making for a longer, more demanding climb than Bom Sucesso. It crosses old plantation zones then enters primary forest; some operators prefer it when the Bom Sucesso side is affected by landslides.
SourceTraverse Bom Sucesso → Pico Mesa → puncak → Ponta Figo
Berat (traverse hutan hujan primer, naik-turun panjang)A traverse route ascending from Bom Sucesso to the summit and descending toward the Ponta Figo side (or vice versa), so hikers avoid retracing the same trail. It passes the Pico Mesa camp and crosses Obô cloud forest on both sides; it requires two-point pickup logistics and is usually arranged by local operators.
SourceTrekking hutan Parque Natural Obô (program berpemandu)
Berat (trek hutan tropis basah)A guided trekking program in Obô Natural Park that includes the ascent of Pico de São Tomé as part of a primary-rainforest traverse. It describes an itinerary through cloud forest to the island's highest summit, suited to those wanting to combine the climb with observing endemic biodiversity.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Climbing Pico de São Tomé (2,024 m) — the roof of São Tomé and Príncipe — means pushing through the humid, misty primary rainforest of Obô Natural Park, usually over 1–2 days with a night at the Pico Mesa camp. Because much online content is confused with the Pico Cão Grande spire, the sources below were chosen to be specifically about the Pico de São Tomé ascent; a mix of Portuguese-language expedition footage, travel blogs (EN/PT), and operator guides, all verified live.
