Description

Pico das Agulhas Negras (2,791 m) is Brazil's fifth-highest peak and the highest point of Rio de Janeiro state, rising in the Serra da Mantiqueira inside Itatiaia National Park — Brazil's oldest national park. Unlike the Andean volcanoes, it is an alkaline (nepheline syenite) rock outcrop whose dark needle-like spires give it its name ('black needles'). The classic ascent starts from the park's high plateau (Planalto do Itatiaia): a trek across high-altitude grasslands (campos de altitude) past iconic rock formations such as the Prateleiras, finishing with an exposed scramble of several dozen metres aided by fixed chains and iron steps to the narrow summit. The panorama takes in the Mantiqueira valleys and, on clear days, the broad Itatiaia plateau. Because of the altitude and the exposed final section, the route demands fitness, a cool head, and attention to fast-changing weather.

Routes

Travessia Ruy Braga (Agulhas Negras ↔ Prateleiras)

Sangat sulit (medan terekspos, butuh pengalaman & orientasi)
±8–12 jam

A classic, demanding traverse linking Pico das Agulhas Negras with the Prateleiras formations across remote high-altitude rock terrain in Itatiaia. Requires strong fitness, navigation skills, and experience on exposed ground.

Trilha do Cume (via Abrigo Rebouças / Parte Alta)

Menantang (ada escalaminhada/via ferrata terekspos di puncak)
+450 m ±5–7 jam PP

Standard route to the summit from the Parte Alta parking area near Abrigo Rebouças. The trail crosses high-altitude vegetation and rock slabs, finishing with an exposed rocky scramble (escalaminhada / via-ferrata style) using hand-and-foot holds to reach the 2,791 m summit.

Climbing Experiences

Pico das Agulhas Negras (2,791 m), Brazil's fifth-highest peak and the high point of Rio de Janeiro state in Itatiaia National Park. Hikers highlight the trek across the high plateau (parte alta) and the final 'escalaminhada' — an exposed hand-and-foot rock scramble to the narrow summit.
