Description

Pico da Bandeira (≈2,892 m) is the third-highest mountain in Brazil and the highest point of the country's Southeast Region as well as of both Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo states. It rises in the Serra do Caparaó within Caparaó National Park, straddling the state border. Before higher Amazonian summits were surveyed it was long considered Brazil's highest point. The climb is non-technical but demanding: from the Minas Gerais side the trail leaves Portaria Alto Caparaó, reaches the Tronqueira parking area, and ascends past Terreirão to the summit — many hikers set off before dawn to reach the top for sunrise above a sea of clouds. The Espírito Santo side (Dores do Rio Preto / Pedra Menina) offers a longer, quieter route. Temperatures can fall to near freezing with frost, so warm gear matters.

Rute terpopuler dari Portaria Alto Caparaó menuju area parkir Tronqueira, lalu mendaki melewati area Terreirão (lokasi berkemah) hingga cume. Banyak pendaki berangkat sebelum subuh untuk mengejar matahari terbit. Jalur batu yang jelas namun panjang; perlu pakaian hangat karena suhu bisa mendekati nol.

Climbing Pico da Bandeira via Caparaó National Park is one of Brazil's most popular sunrise treks. Trip reports describe pre-dawn starts from the Tronqueira parking area (Minas Gerais side), a long rocky trail past Terreirão, near-freezing cold, and sweeping seas of cloud from the roof of the Southeast Region. Some videos document a tougher traverse from the Espírito Santo side, others focus on sunrise timelapses from the summit.
