Description

Pico da Antónia is the highest point of Santiago, the largest island of Cape Verde, at 1,394 metres (4,573 ft). It rises in the central part of the island and forms the core of the protected Parque Natural da Serra do Pico da Antónia; the towns of Picos and Assomada lie nearby. Geologically, the Pico da Antónia formation is of volcanic origin and was built between roughly 3.3 and 2.3 million years ago during the Piacenzian and Gelasian ages. Its summit sits at the tripoint of three municipalities — São Salvador do Mundo, São Lourenço dos Órgãos and Ribeira Grande de Santiago — and to its north rises the Ribeira de Pico da Antónia, a source river of the Ribeira Seca that is vital to the island's agriculture. The Serra do Pico da Antónia is recognised by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area. For hikers the area offers rolling green terrain around Rui Vaz and São Jorge dos Órgãos with sweeping views over Santiago's valleys, though the very summit is crowned with communication antennas. It rounds out Pico do Fogo and Topo da Coroa as the high points of Cape Verde's main islands.

Routes

Pico da Antónia via Rui Vaz

Sedang–berat; jalur curam berbatu lepas, butuh langkah mantap di punggungan puncak
12.00 km 4–7 jam pulang-pergi (±9–15 km)

The climb to Santiago's highest point usually starts from the village of Rui Vaz. The trail ascends through agricultural terraces and the green slopes of the Serra do Pico da Antónia — one of Cape Verde's richest pockets of endemic plants — on steep paths with loose rock that demand care, especially along the ridge to the roughly 1,392 m summit crowned with communication antennas. Much of the route is unmarked, so a local guide is recommended. On a clear day the summit gives 360° views over Santiago's valleys, and in very clear conditions toward the islands of Fogo and Maio. The best window is the dry season (November–June), with an early start to avoid the midday heat.

Climbing Experiences

Pico da Antónia and the central highlands of Santiago island have a lively local hiking tradition, especially among Cape Verdean walkers themselves. The documentation is mixed: several videos show ascents that genuinely go to the summit of Pico da Antónia (the high point of Santiago), while others hike the better-known trekking areas nearby — Serra Malagueta and the Ribeira Principal valley. Together with a local operator's trail guide and one honest blog report, these sources give a rounded picture: rolling green volcanic terrain, often-unmarked paths with loose rock on the summit ridge, 360° views on a clear day, and a summit crowned with communication antennas.
