Description

Pico Bolívar (4,978 m) is Venezuela's highest peak, rising in the Cordillera de Mérida and named after Simón Bolívar, South America's liberator. It was once reached via the Mérida Cable Car (Teleférico de Mérida), historically one of the world's highest, currently under rehabilitation, though the final summit push still requires technical rock and ice climbing. The permanent glaciers of Pico Bolívar have retreated dramatically due to climate change, making it a stark symbol of tropical Andean glacier loss. Best conditions are during the dry season from December to April.

Routes

Arista Timur Laut (Northeast Ridge)

Berat–sangat berat (teknis)
+800 m 3–4 hari

Rute Selatan (via Loma Redonda)

Sedang–berat
+1200 m 2–3 hari

Climbing Experiences

Pico Bolívar (4,978 m), Venezuela's highest peak in the Sierra Nevada de Mérida. The normal 'La Travesía' route starts from Pico Espejo via the Mukumbarí cable car (among the world's highest, at 4,765 m), then traverses rocky terrain to the summit, requiring climbing technique. The glaciers that once gave the peak its 'nevado' character have nearly vanished due to climate change. Climbers emphasize logistical issues with the cable car, accommodating base in Mérida, and technical crux near the summit.
