Guinea Ekuatorial (GQ)
Location / Range
Massif selatan Pulau Bioko / Jalur Vulkanik Kamerun (Cameroon Volcanic Line)
Mountain type
Gunung berapi tua tererosi dengan bekas kawah/kaldera
Volcanic?
Yes — volcano
Coordinates
3.3578, 8.6336
Difficulty
Sangat sulit — ekspedisi off-trail menembus hutan awan basah, nyaris tanpa jalur mapan
Best Season
Hazards
Curah hujan ekstrem dan medan berlumpur; hutan awan lebat tanpa jalur jelas (mudah tersesat); keterpencilan tanpa infrastruktur, pemukiman, atau sinyal; penyeberangan sungai; kelembapan dan risiko hipotermia di ketinggian

Description

Pico Biaó is a volcanic peak in the southern part of Bioko Island (formerly Fernando Poo), Equatorial Guinea, standing about 2,009 m according to English Wikipedia—though Spanish Wikipedia gives 1,912 m. It is among the island's highest summits after Pico Basile (3,011 m), described as the second or third highest depending on whether the 2,261 m rim of the Gran Caldera de Luba is counted. Bioko belongs to the Cameroon Volcanic Line, and Pico Biaó is an old, eroded volcano with a former crater/caldera; a crater lake, Lake Biao, lies nearby. The area falls within the Gran Caldera de Luba Scientific Reserve, an exceptionally wet montane cloud forest—rainfall can reach 10,000 mm a year—harbouring outstanding biodiversity: some of Africa's highest primate densities (drill, colobus) and dozens of endemic bird races. Owing to its remoteness (up to a two-day walk in) and near-total lack of infrastructure, Pico Biaó is very rarely climbed and remains sparsely documented.

Routes

Jalur hutan awan Gran Caldera de Luba (dari kawasan Luba)

Sangat sulit — ekspedisi off-trail
Ekspedisi beberapa hari (kawasan dalam ±2 hari jalan kaki)

The approach to Pico Biaó and the Gran Caldera de Luba pushes through the exceptionally wet, dense montane cloud forest of Bioko's southern massif. Per reserve records, the interior takes about two days on foot and is almost untouched owing to its remoteness; there is no established trail, so a guide, permits, and full expedition gear are required.

Pendekatan via dataran tinggi Moka (Moka Wildlife Center / BBPP)

Sangat sulit — terpencil, off-trail
Ekspedisi beberapa hari

Expeditions into southern Bioko are usually coordinated through the Moka Wildlife Center research station run by the Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program (BBPP) on the Moka highlands before pushing through the forest toward the caldera/summit. The exact route is poorly documented publicly.

Trek pesisir selatan (Moraka Playa → Hormigas → North Camp)

Sangat sulit — trek ekspedisi belasan mil, off-trail
±2 hari sekali jalan menuju kaldera

The expedition route used by wildlife-research teams enters from Bioko's southern coast: from the Moraka Playa beach base camp, it pushes through forest via Hormigas camp to North Camp, then climbs a steep ~1,200 m ascent to the rim of the Gran Caldera de Luba before dropping inside. It runs roughly eighteen miles, usually scheduled as two days each way; the terrain is wet, trackless, and demands a guide and permits.

Climbing Experiences

Experiences on Pico Biaó are almost undocumented owing to its remoteness — the peak stands inside the Gran Caldera de Luba, a protected rainforest reserve in Bioko's southern massif. Clips filmed on the slopes show how dense and wet the cloud forest is, cut through by hand, while conservation-expedition and operator accounts show how the caldera is only reached by multi-day treks from the coast or the Moka highlands.
