Description
Pica d'Estats (3,143 m) is the highest peak in Catalonia and one of the most sought-after 'three-thousanders' for Catalan hikers. It rises in the Montcalm Massif at the heart of the Pyrenees, right on the Spanish–French border, and lies within the Parc Natural de l'Alt Pirineu, Catalonia's largest natural park. Its summit sits alongside Pic de Montcalm (3,077 m) on the French side and Pic Verdaguer (3,131 m), so many hikers link two or three peaks in a single day. The classic route starts from the Vall Ferrera valley in Catalonia: from the village of Àreu or the Molinàs area, climbing to the Refugi de Vallferrera, then following the glacial valley past the Estany d'Estats lake to the border ridge and the summit. The ascent is non-technical, but the distance and elevation gain make for a very long day — many hikers overnight at the refuge to break up the trip.

Routes
Rute Normal dari Vall Ferrera (via Refugi de Vallferrera & Port de Sotllo)
Berat namun tidak teknis (F): pendakian gunung tinggi sehari yang sangat panjang dengan scrambling batu ringan menjelang puncakThe classic and most popular route to Catalonia's highest summit. From the village of Àreu, a track leads to the La Molinassa/Pla de Boavi area, then climbs to the Refugi de Vallferrera (1,940 m), the main base. From the refuge, the trail follows the Coma d'Estats, passing the Estany de Sotllo and Estany d'Estats glacial lakes, then climbs to the Port de Sotllo (~2,894 m). From there it crosses briefly onto the French side near the Coll de Riufret (~2,978 m) before climbing the rocky north side to the 3,143 m summit. The route is non-technical, but its ~18–20 km distance and ~1,500 m of gain make for a very long day — many hikers overnight at the refuge to split the trip. Watch for late-lying snow/névé on the Port de Sotllo slopes into early summer and afternoon thunderstorms.
Route Segments
- 1
Àreu / La Molinassa → Refugi de Vallferrera (1.940 m)
Akses lembah menuju refugi FEEC; basis pendakian, sering dipakai untuk menginap
- 2
Refugi de Vallferrera → Estany d'Estats
Menyusuri Coma d'Estats melewati Estany de Sotllo dan Estany d'Estats; jalur berbatu naik bertahap
- 3
Estany d'Estats → Port de Sotllo (~2.894 m)
Tanjakan ke celah perbatasan; salju/névé bisa bertahan hingga awal musim panas
- 4
Port de Sotllo → Coll de Riufret (~2.978 m) → Puncak Pica d'Estats (3.143 m)
Melintas sisi Prancis lalu scrambling batu lepas ke puncak; opsi lanjut ke Pic Verdaguer (3.131 m)
Sambungan Puncak: Pica d'Estats + Pic Verdaguer + Pic de Montcalm
Berat; menyambung beberapa tiga-ribuan di punggungan perbatasan, sebagian scramblingA popular variant for hikers who want to make the most of their long day: from the Pica d'Estats summit, the border ridge links Pic Verdaguer (3,131 m) to the west and Pic de Montcalm (3,077 m) on the French side. Linking two or three peaks in a single outing adds light scrambling and time but bags several three-thousanders at once. It remains based in the Vall Ferrera and demands careful time and weather management.
SourceClimbing Experiences
For Catalan hikers, climbing Pica d'Estats — Catalonia's highest 'three-thousander' — is almost a rite of passage. Nearly all popular ascents start from the Vall Ferrera valley: from the village of Àreu or the La Molinassa/Pla de Boavi area, up to the Refugi de Vallferrera (1,940 m), then along the Coma d'Estats past the Estany de Sotllo and Estany d'Estats lakes, climbing to the Port de Sotllo (~2,894 m), briefly crossing onto the French side around the Coll de Riufret (~2,978 m), and up to the 3,143 m summit. The terrain is non-technical, but the ~18–20 km distance and ~1,500 m of gain make for a very long day (9–11 hours round trip) — so many hikers overnight at the refuge. Many link the neighbouring peaks: Pic Verdaguer (3,131 m), Punta Gabarró (3,115 m), and Pic de Montcalm (3,077 m) on the French side. The sources below — Spanish/Catalan climbing vlogs, editorial route guides, and the FEEC refuge site — give a realistic picture of the trail, timings, and conditions.
