Description
Pic du Midi d'Ossau (2,884 m) is the most instantly recognisable summit on the French side of the Pyrenees — its distinctive twin-peaked silhouette (Grand Pic and Petit Pic) has been an icon of this mountain range for centuries. Unlike most Pyrenean peaks composed of granite, Ossau is an ancient eroded volcano: andesite and dacite volcanic rock have weathered into dramatically sheer walls that appear to stand apart from the surrounding ridge. The mountain lies entirely within the Pyrenees National Park (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), and the surrounding area is strictly protected. For hikers not seeking technical climbing, the tour of the massif (Tour du Pic du Midi d'Ossau, around 25 km) offers breathtaking views of all sides of this iconic peak — including its famous reflection in the Lacs d'Ayous (especially Lac Gentau), one of the most iconic vistas in the French Pyrenees. Those aiming for the summit take the voie normale through the Refuge de Pombie (2,031 m, owned by the Club Alpin Français), then climb three rock chimneys (cheminées) of around 20 metres requiring PD II+ technical scrambling ability. With views over the Anie massif, Balaïtous, and on clear days the Pic du Midi de Bigorre, Ossau offers an unforgettable experience in Western Europe's most dramatic mountain range.

Routes
Voie Normale — Rute Normal via Refuge de Pombie (Grand Pic, 2.884 m)
Berat (Alpine PD, II+); tiga cheminée (cerobong batu) ~20 m yang memerlukan kemampuan scrambling teknis; helm dan tali direkomendasikan; pemandu IFMGA direkomendasikan untuk pendaki tanpa pengalaman panjatThe Voie Normale starts from the Lac de Bious-Artigues car park (1,421 m) at the end of the D934 road from Laruns — the starting point for all major Ossau routes. From here a rocky trail climbs for around 2.5–3 hours to the Refuge de Pombie (2,031 m, CAF, capacity ~60, reservation essential in summer). The Refuge de Pombie is surrounded on three sides by Ossau's rock walls — one of the most dramatic panoramas in the Pyrenees. From the refuge, the normal route climbs the west face via the Grand Couloir and Col du Soum de Pombie, then enters three rock chimneys: the first (~20 m, III), the second (~20 m, III, most exposed), and the third (~15 m, II+). Above the third chimney, a traverse to the left leads to the Grand Pic summit (2,884 m). Total ascent from the car park is around 1,463 m. Summit views encompass Balaïtous, Vignemale, the Anie massif, and on very clear days the Pic du Midi de Bigorre and Pico de Aneto beyond the border.

Tiga cheminée berbatu ~20 m (III, III, II+); helm dan tali direkomendasikan — cerobong kedua paling terbuka; terrain kering lebih aman dari basah; pemandu direkomendasikan untuk pemula
Climbing Experiences
Climbers who leave accounts of Pic du Midi d'Ossau — whether they reached the summit or chose the circuit tour — agree on one thing: the mountain is more impressive than photographs suggest. The three cheminées on the voie normale do require a rope and helmet, but are accessible to experienced hikers with basic scrambling ability. The circuit tour (Tour de l'Ossau) is the most popular choice: panoramas shift at every turn and the twin-peaked reflection of Ossau appears in the surface of Lac Gentau and other high-altitude alpine lakes — one of the most iconic sights in the French Pyrenees. Most climbers recommend staying overnight at the Refuge de Pombie to break the summit attempt and enjoy sunset and dawn at the foot of the massif.
