Description

Peñalara (2,428 m) is the highest peak of the Sierra de Guadarrama, a range within Spain's Sistema Central that divides the Iberian Peninsula. Straddling the border of the provinces of Madrid and Segovia, it is one of the most emblematic hiking summits for people in Madrid thanks to its easy access from the capital. Its eastern flank holds an ancient glacial cirque with several small alpine lakes (lagunas) and steep escarpments, now protected as the core of the national park. The normal route usually starts at the Puerto de Cotos, climbing gradually through pine forest and then open rocky highland to the rounded summit with sweeping views across the whole Guadarrama. For experienced walkers there is an 'integral' variant along the jagged Risco de los Claveles ridge — far more exposed and demanding. The vegetation is layered by altitude: oak woods lower down, pine forest on the middle slopes, then low high-mountain scrub near the top, with eagles and other raptors often seen overhead.

Climbing Experiences

Peñalara experiences are dominated by the normal route from the Puerto de Cotos — long but relatively friendly, climbing gradually through pine forest and then open rocky highland to the rounded summit. Much of the Spanish-language content shows the glacial lakes (lagunas) in the eastern cirque and sweeping views across the whole Sierra de Guadarrama.
