Description

Peñalara is the highest summit in the Sierra de Guadarrama, on the Madrid–Segovia border. This profile uses the park route leaflet’s elevation of 2,428 m; Wikidata listed 2,430 m when checked. The normal RV2 trail starts at Puerto de Cotos and climbs via Dos Hermanas, while the circuit through the lakes and Risco de los Claveles adds exposed rocky terrain. Valleys and lakes on the mountainside preserve evidence of glaciation. Fog, snow and ice can substantially change the difficulty, so the visitor centre advises checking conditions before setting out. Stay on authorised paths to protect wetlands and reserve areas.

The circuit documented by Coronando Picos runs from Cotos through Laguna Grande, the Cinco Lagunas area and Laguna de los Pájaros, then climbs the ridge towards Claveles and Peñalara. It returns via Dos Hermanas. Distance and ascent figures come from the author’s trip; wet rock, wind and remaining snow increase the difficulty of the exposed passage.

RV7 — Laguna Grande de Peñalara

This alternative does not reach the summit: it follows the camino del agua to Laguna Grande. The official leaflet gives 2.6 km and one hour each way. In Hoya de Peñalara it uses authorised paths and boardwalks; stay on the route and out of protected lakeshore areas.

Rute normal dari Puerto de Cotos

The official RV2 route to Pico Peñalara climbs from Cotos via Dos Hermanas, then follows stone cairns towards the summit. The park leaflet gives 5 km and 2 hours 30 minutes for the outward ascent only. Fog, snow and ice can complicate navigation; ask the visitor centre about conditions and required equipment.
