Description

Pen y Fan (886 m) is the highest peak in South Wales, in the Brecon Beacons National Park (Bannau Brycheiniog) in Powys. It is also the highest British summit south of Cadair Idris in Snowdonia and the historic county top of Brecknockshire. Its twin summits, Pen y Fan and Corn Du (871 m), were once called Cadair Arthur or 'Arthur's Seat'. The mountain and its surroundings are owned by the National Trust, whose work parties continually repair erosion caused by the peak's huge popularity with walkers. Pen y Fan is also used by the military in UK Special Forces selection; in July 2013 three soldiers died of heat exhaustion during an SAS-selection 'Point-to-Point' march — a reminder that this popular hill still demands preparation and weather awareness.

Routes

Pen y Fan Horseshoe (sirkular via Cribyn & Fan y Big)

Sulit
15.00 km +785 m 4,5–6 jam

A challenging circular loop summiting four peaks — Corn Du, Pen y Fan, Cribyn and Fan y Big — along long ridgelines. Steep climbs in quick succession between peaks are the main challenge, rewarded by panoramic views across the Brecon Beacons National Park. It requires good fitness, sound navigation and caution against weather and wind on the very exposed ridge.

Route Segments

  1. 1

Awal → Corn Du → Pen y Fan

    ⏱ 1,5–2 jam

Naik ke dua puncak tertinggi lebih dulu

  2. 2

    Pen y Fan → Cribyn (795 m)

    ⏱ 1–1,5 jam

Turun tajam lalu naik kembali ke Cribyn — bagian paling melelahkan

  3. 3

Cribyn → Fan y Big → turun menyusuri punggungan

    ⏱ 2–2,5 jam

Punggungan panjang terbuka; navigasi penting saat berkabut

Pont ar Daf / Storey Arms via Corn Du (rute klasik)

Menengah
8.00 km +450 m 2,5–3 jam pulang-pergi

The most popular and shortest route, starting from the Pont ar Daf car park near Storey Arms on the A470. A well-built stone path climbs steadily over Corn Du (871 m) before reaching the Pen y Fan summit (886 m). Because it is so busy, the route is nicknamed 'The Motorway'; the National Trust regularly repairs it to combat erosion. Though technically easy, the exposed ridge makes weather and wind the main factors.

Route Segments

  1. 1

Parkir Pont ar Daf → Bwlch Duwynt (sadel)

    ⏱ 1–1,5 jam

Jalur batu menanjak stabil; percabangan menuju Corn Du atau langsung memotong lereng

  2. 2

    Bwlch Duwynt → Corn Du (871 m) → Pen y Fan (886 m)

    ⏱ 45–60 menit

Punggungan terbuka bereksposur; angin kencang dan kabut sering; puncak datar berpenanda batu

Climbing Experiences

Pen y Fan (886 m), the highest peak in South Wales in the Brecon Beacons National Park (Bannau Brycheiniog), is one of Britain's most-climbed mountains. The shortest route from Pont ar Daf near Storey Arms is a well-built stone path nicknamed 'The Motorway', while the Pen y Fan Horseshoe links four summits along long ridges for a tougher day. Climbers stress that although the path is obvious, the ridge is very exposed: fast-changing weather, cloud and strong winds are the main hazards. The mountain is also famous through the 'Fan Dance', a military route used in UK Special Forces selection.
