Description

Pasir Kekenceng — known in local reporting as Gunung Kekenceng — is a low hill in Tegalpanjang village, Cireunghas district, Sukabumi Regency, West Java. Covering only about 12 hectares, it is not a hiking objective but a landmark carrying unusual historical weight. Research by Prof. Reiza D. Dienaputra of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences at Universitas Padjadjaran, published in December 2025, concludes that Gunung Kekenceng served as an operational base of the Barisan Sabilillah militia battalion during the fight against Dutch forces, resting on the Verslag Batalion Sabilillah of 22 January 1947 and a report of 2 January 1947 indicating the base was already in use in late 1946. About a kilometre away, at Kampung Pojok Tengah, lies a Japanese WWII military complex locals call "Hiroshima-2" — which, per historian Irman Firmansyah, held a quinine factory, food warehouses and vehicle workshops — alongside remains of Siliwangi Division / TKR Third Regiment defensive positions. The area was registered with Indonesia's Ministry of Education and Culture in 2019 after a 2013 village decree, but still holds only "suspected cultural heritage" status. Since 2021 residents and a heritage foundation have repeatedly protested andesite quarrying on the hill; in April 2021 some three hectares were reported stripped within three weeks, and protests recurred in November 2025. Its elevation is unsettled: the Copernicus digital elevation model gives about 707 m at the OpenStreetMap summit point, while reporting citing a 1945 Allied map quotes roughly 999 m. The OpenStreetMap node itself comes from an NGA-GNS gazetteer import rather than a field survey, so the summit locals mean may sit slightly elsewhere.
