Description
Parângu Mare (2,519 m) is the highest peak of the Parâng Mountains and the third-highest peak of the entire Southern Carpathians in Romania. It crowns one of the longest ridge lines (creasta) in the Carpathians — a high traverse running for tens of kilometres over a chain of 2,000 m-plus summits and past glacial lakes such as Lacul Câlcescu. The most popular starting point is the Rânca resort on the Transalpina road, which shortens the approach to the ridge. From Rânca, hikers follow the open, undulating ridge over several secondary peaks before reaching the summit dome of Parângu Mare, from which broad views open toward the Retezat, Făgăraș, and other Carpathian ranges in the distance. Because almost the whole route runs along an exposed high ridge, the main challenge is not technical difficulty but distance, exposure to weather — especially afternoon thunderstorms — and limited water sources, so many hikers do it as a two-day trip with camping.

Routes
Stațiunea Parâng → Vf. Cârja → Vf. Gemănarea → Parângul Mare (pulang-pergi)
Sedang–menantang; ~17 km, naik-turun ±1.390 m, tanpa sumber air di punggunganRidge route starting from the Parâng ski resort (~1,800 m), following the red-marked crest over Scurtu, Cârja, Stoienița and Gemănarea to the 2,519 m summit; about 17 km with roughly 1,390 m of ascent/descent and no water sources along the crest, so carrying enough water is essential.
SourceTransalpina (Pasul Urdele, dekat Rânca) → creasta Parâng → Parângul Mare
Sulit (jarak sangat panjang, ~32 km)Long ridge traverse from Pasul Urdele on the Transalpina road near Rânca (~2,050 m), following red blazes over Iezer, Mohoru and Setea Mare past glacial lakes (Zănoaga, Roșiile, Mândra) to Parângul Mare; about 32 km of continuous ascent and descent, so many hikers split it over two days.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Parângu Mare, the highest peak of the Parâng Mountains, is almost always climbed along the long ridge (creasta) from the Rânca resort / Stațiunea Parâng on the Transalpina road. The sources below range from an English backpacking vlog and out-and-back reports from the Transalpina to a route via Vf. Cârja and a long 32 km traverse past glacial lakes. All confirm the mountain's character: a long, open ridge trip with continuous ups and downs and full exposure to the weather. Every link was verified live before inclusion.
