Description
Pão de Açúcar (396 m), or Sugarloaf Mountain, is an iconic granite-and-gneiss monolith rising from the Urca peninsula at the mouth of Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro. Its shape, resembling a traditional loaf of refined sugar (pão de açúcar), makes it one of Brazil's most recognisable landmarks. Most visitors ride the bondinho—a historic cable car running since 1912, among the world's oldest—in two stages: from Praia Vermelha to the top of Morro da Urca (220 m), then on to the summit of Pão de Açúcar. Hikers can reach Morro da Urca for free via a dirt trail from the Pista Cláudio Coutinho, while the summit of Sugarloaf itself is reached only by cable car or by rock climbing. Its rock faces have been a cradle of Brazilian rock climbing since the early 20th century, with dozens of classic routes such as the Costão. From the top, the panorama sweeps across Copacabana beach, the Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado, and the whole bay. The area lies within the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Rio de Janeiro: Carioca Landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea'.

Routes
Bondinho (Kereta Gantung) — Praia Vermelha → Morro da Urca → Pão de Açúcar
Sangat mudah (wisata)The most popular and easiest way to the summit of Pão de Açúcar. From the station at Praia Vermelha, the historic cable car (running since 1912) climbs in two stages: first to the top of Morro da Urca (220 m), then across to the Sugarloaf summit (396 m). It requires no physical effort and suits all ages. The top has viewing paths, cafés, and a 360° panorama over Guanabara Bay, Copacabana, and Corcovado.
Panjat Tebing — Costão do Pão de Açúcar
Berat (teknis, multi-pitch)The granite wall of Sugarloaf is one of the birthplaces of Brazilian rock climbing since the early 20th century, with dozens of classic routes—the most famous being the Costão, a long line on the sea-facing side. These routes demand technique, gear, and multi-pitch climbing experience, usually with a certified guide. This is not a walking route; it is for experienced climbers only.
Trilha do Morro da Urca (via Pista Cláudio Coutinho)
Mudah–sedangA free walking trail to the first summit, Morro da Urca (220 m). Starting from the Pista Cláudio Coutinho at the base of the cliffs near Praia Vermelha, the dirt path climbs through remnant Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) with monkeys and birds. From Morro da Urca, hikers can continue to the Sugarloaf summit by taking one cable-car stage, or descend the way they came. It is popular with Rio locals for morning runs and light hiking.
