Description

Panchachuli is a group of five snow peaks (Panchachuli I–V, 6,334–6,904 m) at the eastern end of Kumaon, Uttarakhand, India, near Dugtu village in the Darma Valley. The peaks form the watershed between the Gori and Darmaganga valleys. The name — "five hearths" (panch chuli) — is linked to the legend of the Pandavas' last cooking fires before their ascent to heaven. The group was first climbed by an Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) team in 1972 via the Uttari Balati glacier, led by Major Hukam Singh. The highest, Panchachuli II (6,904 m), became famous through the 1992 British–Indian expedition (including Chris Bonington and Stephen Venables) that ended in a dramatic abseil accident. For most visitors the draw is the trek to Panchachuli Base Camp through the remote, beautiful Darma Valley, with the peaks' walls glowing red at sunset as seen from Munsiyari.

Routes

Rute ekspedisi puncak — gletser Uttari Balati (Panchachuli II)

Pendakian glasial teknis >6.900 m; jarang didaki, butuh izin IMF
Ekspedisi multi-minggu

Trek Panchachuli Base Camp (Dharchula → Dar → Dugtu/Dantu → Zero Point Base Camp, Lembah Darma)

Trekking sedang–berat ketinggian tinggi; non-teknis, medan terpencil
± 6–8 hari (dari/ke Dharchula)

Jalur utama untuk melihat Panchachuli dari dekat. Dari Dharchula, perjalanan darat ke Lembah Darma lalu trekking melewati desa-desa Dar, Dugtu/Dantu dan padang tinggi menuju base camp (Zero Point) di kaki gugus lima puncak. Kawasan dekat perbatasan sehingga butuh izin inner line. Terbaik pada Mei–Juni dan September–Oktober; medan longsor & penyeberangan sungai menuntut kehati-hatian.

Climbing Experiences

Panchachuli's summits are rarely climbed and require technical expeditions, so visitor footage centres on the Panchachuli Base Camp trek through the Darma Valley in Kumaon, Uttarakhand. Videos show the journey from Dharchula/Dugtu through remote Darma villages, high meadows, glaciers and the Zero Point base camp beneath the five peaks. Two operator write-ups (Danu Adventure, Super Trekkers) add a textual 6-day itinerary, the Dharchula → Tawa Ghat → Nagling → Baling → Dugtu → Dantu → base camp (~4,260 m) route, its easy grade, best seasons, and the mandatory Inner Line Permit plus Bhotiya/Shauka culture.
