Information
- Elevation
- 4.008 m
- Country
- Mongolia (MN)
- Location / Range
- Khangai Nuruu (Pegunungan Khangai) — Provinsi Zavkhan, kawasan Otgontenger Strictly Protected Area (Dархан цаазат газар), sekitar 45–100 km dari kota Uliastai
- Mountain type
- Volcanic?
- No (non-volcanic)
- Coordinates
- 47.6367, 97.5023
- Difficulty
- PUNCAK DILARANG DIDAKI (alasan sakral + konservasi).
- Permits & Rules
Description
Otgontenger (Отгонтэнгэр, 4,008 m per Wikidata — other sources give 4,021 m up to 4,031 m) is the highest peak of the Khangai range in Zavkhan Province, Mongolia, and one of the country's most revered mountains. Unlike its rounded, grassy Khangai neighbours, Otgontenger stands as a granite massif with steep rock walls on its northern side and carries the only permanent glacier in the entire Khangai range — a combination that makes it both distinctive and technically demanding. Yet what defines this mountain is not its climbing difficulty but its sacredness. Its name means roughly 'youngest sky', and since President Ochirbat's Decree No. 110 of 16 May 1995, Otgontenger has been one of the mountains accorded state worship (төрийн их тахилга) — an official ceremony held every four years at the state ovoo on its southern flank, attended by the head of state. The area has been protected since 1992 and designated a Strictly Protected Area of roughly 95,510 ha. The consequence is unambiguous: climbing the summit is forbidden, on religious grounds and to conserve its permanent snow and glacier. That ban is not a formality. In October 2017, 27 people ignored it; a snow slab released on the descent and killed 17 of them. The honest Otgontenger experience is therefore not a summit push but a goroo — walking a circuit around the mountain as an act of reverence — a multi-day trek with pack horses from the Uliastai side, camping at high lakes such as Badar Khundaga and Olgoi, and crossing a rocky pass at around 3,400 m, well below a summit deliberately left untouched.

Routes
Goroo Otgontenger (mengelilingi gunung) — Dund Gyalaan → pelana Khatan beel → Melkhii khad → Danau Övör Badar Khundaga → Danau Olgoi → pelana 3.400 m → Lembah Tsagduultai → Dund Gyalaan
Non-teknis — dikategorikan operator sebagai 'perjalanan alam, trekking, goroo'. Ketinggian berkisar 2.000–3.400 m; medan berupa batu-kerikil lepas, padang alpine, dan pelana. Musim terbaik Mei–Oktober. Kuda beban mengangkut barang. This is the correct — and legal — way to 'climb' Otgontenger: not up it, but around it. The goroo is the act of circumambulating a mountain in reverence, and its full version here is a six-day trek whose high point is only a 3,400 m rocky pass, far below the 4,008 m summit deliberately left untouched. Access: fly Ulaanbaatar–Donoi (Uliastai), then about 100 km by vehicle to the start at Dund Gyalaan, where the vehicle is left behind and pack horses take over. Day one walks from Dund Gyalaan to the foot of the Khatan beel pass on the mountain's northeast shoulder; day two to Melkhii khad ('Turtle Rock') at the southeast foot; day three is about 4 hours to Övör Badar Khundaga lake, overnighting at Olgoi lake; day four is the hard one — crossing the 3,400 m boulder-and-scree pass and descending to a small lake at the head of the Tsagduultai valley; day five follows Tsagduultai back to the start, with a reserve day built in. The kit list makes clear this is no stroll: down jacket, −15 °C sleeping bag, ankle-supporting boots, windproofs. The operator must arrange protected-area permits in advance.
Route Segments
- 1
Dund Gyalaan → kaki pelana Khatan beel (bahu timur laut)
- 2
Khatan beel → Melkhii khad ('Batu Kura-kura', kaki tenggara)
Menyusuri kaki gunung searah laku goroo
- 3
- 4
Danau Olgoi → pelana 3.400 m → hulu Lembah Tsagduultai
- 5
Lembah Tsagduultai → Dund Gyalaan (menutup lingkar)
Turun menyusuri lembah kembali ke titik awal
Pendekatan Uliastai / kamp Bayan via Tsagaan Nuur & pelana Dayan davaa
Tanpa grade formal; berupa trek jalan kaki/berkuda menuju kawasan sekitar gunung, tanpa bagian teknis. Puncak tetap dikecualikan.A shorter, more self-reliant approach described in an independent English-language trekking guide. It starts from the Bayan children's camp, passes Tsagaan Nuur, then crosses the Dayan davaa pass into the Otgontenger area. The guide covers transport from Uliastai, rough costs, water sources, and navigation and maps — useful for independent trekkers not booking an operator package. Uliastai is where the strictly-protected-area permit is obtained, about 45–50 km west of the massif. The author states plainly that climbing the peak is forbidden because the mountain is sacred; what this route offers is the surroundings, not the summit.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Otgontenger is a rare case of a mountain famous for not being climbed. Ascending the summit is banned — to respect its sacred status and to protect its permanent snow and glacier — so the 'experience' here takes other forms: the goroo (walking a circuit around the mountain as an act of reverence), multi-day treks with pack horses from the Uliastai side, horse riding across the surrounding steppe, and witnessing the tahilga, the state worship ceremony held every four years at the state ovoo on the southern flank with the head of state attending. There is therefore no first-hand summit report in this list, and that is not a research gap but an accurate reflection of reality. The cost of ignoring the ban has been paid heavily: in October 2017, 27 people climbed despite warnings, and a snow slab on the descent killed 17 of them. The sources below were chosen to show Otgontenger as people actually encounter it: from a distance, from a pass, from horseback, and at ceremony.
