Description

Ol Donyo Sabuk, better known as Kilimambogo, is a forested standalone mountain of about 2,146 m rising from the plains roughly 70 km north-east of Nairobi. Its name means "mountain of buffalo", and African buffalo do still live in its forest — which is why the Kenya Wildlife Service requires every hiker to be escorted by an armed ranger. The whole mountain sits inside the roughly 20 km² Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park, also home to olive baboons, vervet monkeys, antelope, and forest birds. There are two ways up: a murram road of about 9 km each way, drivable and the choice of most hikers, or a much shorter but steeper footpath. The road ascent typically takes five to six hours round trip. The summit is often shrouded in mist, but on a clear day the view opens onto the Fourteen Falls on the Athi River and as far as Mount Kenya. On the slopes lies the grave of Sir William Northrup McMillan, the American colonial landowner who leased Juja Ranch in 1905 and hosted guests including Theodore Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. Its proximity to Nairobi makes Kilimambogo one of Kenya's most popular day hikes, often combined with a stop at the nearby Fourteen Falls.

Routes

Jalan murram (jalan tanah) dari Gerbang Utama KWS ke puncak

Sedang; non-teknis, sekitar 9 km sekali jalan (±18 km pulang-pergi) di jalan tanah berbatu dengan tanjakan panjang
~5–6 jam pulang-pergi

The route almost every hiker takes. It starts at the main gate of Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park after paying KWS entry and ranger fees, then follows the drivable murram road to the summit marker at about 2,146 m. An armed ranger escort is mandatory because African buffalo still live in the slope forest — the origin of the name Kilimambogo, "mountain of buffalo". Olive baboons, vervet monkeys, and forest birds are common along the way. The upper section is often in mist; on a clear day the summit looks out over the Fourteen Falls on the Athi River and, occasionally, to Mount Kenya. The grave of Sir William Northrup McMillan lies on the slopes, on land once part of Juja Ranch.

Jalan setapak (footpath) — jalur pendek yang lebih curam

Sedang; sekitar 6,6 km, lebih pendek daripada jalan murram tetapi tanjakannya lebih tajam
~3–4 jam pulang-pergi

An alternative that cuts the distance sharply in exchange for a steeper climb: about 6.6 km on a forest footpath instead of the roughly 18 km round trip on the murram road. It suits hikers who want a faster ascent or who would rather avoid the road's exposed, hot sections. The same rules apply — KWS ticket at the gate and a ranger escort — and the path cuts through denser forest, so wildlife encounters are more likely. Rocks and roots turn slick after rain.

Climbing Experiences

Kilimambogo (Ol Donyo Sabuk) is a classic day hike out of Nairobi, and experience content is abundant because Kenya's hiking community climbs it so often. Nearly every account starts at the main KWS gate, ascends either the murram road of about 9 km each way or the steeper footpath, and stresses the same two points: an armed ranger escort is mandatory because of buffalo, and the summit is often in mist. Many hikers pair it with the Fourteen Falls on the Athi River a few kilometres away.
