Description
Odaesan (1,563 m at Birobong) is a forested massif in Gangwon Province, South Korea, designated the country's 11th national park in 1975. The Baekdudaegan ridge divides it into the Woljeongsa and Sogeumgang districts, and beyond Birobong the park holds further summits such as Horyeongbong, Sangwangbong, Dongdaesan and Durobong. The name 'Odae' (five terraces) refers to the five ridges enclosing its valleys. The mountain is also a centre of Korean Buddhism: Woljeongsa temple sits at its foot, Sangwonsa higher up the valley, and Jeokmyeolbogung is one of the shrines believed to enshrine relics of the Buddha. It once housed the Odaesan Sago, a royal archive where the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty were stored. The most popular hike starts from the Sangwonsa car park and climbs wooden stairways and stone paths to Birobong in roughly 3–3.5 hours round trip; stronger hikers continue on a ridge loop over Sangwangbong (1,491 m). Odaesan's old-growth forest, among the best preserved in Korea, is its main draw.

Routes
Lingkar punggungan Birobong–Sangwangbong
Sedang–berat; punggungan berhutan, jalur tanah berpenguat balok kayuAn extension of the Birobong route: from the summit the trail continues along a forested ridge to Sangwangbong (1,491 m) before dropping back to the Sangwonsa valley. It suits those wanting a longer spell in Odaesan's old-growth forest, on dirt trails reinforced with wooden beams rather than stone stairs.
SourceRute Birobong via Sangwonsa (jalur terpendek)
Sedang; ±7 km pulang-pergi, didominasi tangga kayu dan jalan batuThe most popular and shortest route to Birobong (1,563 m). It starts from the Sangwonsa car park and ticket office, passes Sangwonsa temple and then Jeokmyeolbogung, and climbs almost continuously on wooden stairways and stone paths to the summit. Not technical, but the long stair sections are hard on the legs.

Climbing Experiences
Most Odaesan hikers take the shortest line to Birobong: from the Sangwonsa car park, past Sangwonsa temple and Jeokmyeolbogung, then up wooden stairways and stone paths to the 1,563 m summit — roughly 7 km round trip in 3–3.5 hours. Nothing is technical, but the stairs are long and repetitive and they drain the legs. Hikers wanting more link a ridge loop over Sangwangbong (1,491 m) or traverse toward Duryobong and Noinbong. In winter the Odaesan ridge becomes a snow landscape prized by Korea's 'hundred famous mountains' hikers. Note that trails close seasonally each spring and autumn for forest-fire watch.
