Description
The Nyika Plateau is a broad afromontane highland in northern Malawi (with a small portion in northeastern Zambia) that forms the core of Nyika National Park — Malawi's oldest and largest national park. Most of it lies between 2,100 and 2,200 m, with its high point, Nganda Peak, at about 2,605 m. Its scenery differs sharply from the rest of Malawi: rolling hills, broad valleys threaded by small streams, rough grassland, and clumps of pines and afromontane forest. The area is known for multi-day hiking and trekking, mountain biking and walking safaris, thanks to abundant antelope (eland, roan), zebra, more than 400 bird species and hundreds of orchid species. Its north-west escarpment towers hundreds of metres above the Luangwa Valley.
