Description
Nevado del Huila is the highest volcano in Colombia and the highest peak of the Cordillera Central in the Andes, its high point (Pico Central) reaching about 5,364 m. The elongated, glacier-clad massif has four main summits: Pico Norte (~5,300 m), La Cresta (~5,200 m), Pico Central (the highest), and Pico Sur (~5,030 m). It sits at the border of Huila, Cauca and Tolima departments, in the heart of Nasa indigenous territory. The volcano reactivated in 2007–2008 with eruptions and lahars and is now closely monitored. Climbing it is a heavy, remote alpine expedition: a long approach across páramo (e.g. from Belalcázar in Cauca or Tacueyó), travel on crevassed glaciers, and a pre-dawn summit push — typically 3–5 days. Access requires coordination with the local indigenous communities and certified guides.

Routes
Ruta Norte (Pico Norte)
Berat (alpin, gletser)An approach from the north, often via the Tacueyó area, to Pico Norte (~5,300 m). Similar in difficulty to the southern route — glacier terrain and altitude above 5,000 m — and likewise requires community permission and an experienced guide.
Ruta Sur (Pico Central/Sur)
Berat (alpin, gletser)The most common ascent route from the south, usually starting from Belalcázar (Cauca). A long approach across páramo to a high camp, then a pre-dawn summit push over crevassed glaciers to Pico Central (the highest) or Pico Sur. Requires glacier gear, acclimatization and coordination with the indigenous communities.
Traverse lengkap empat puncak
Sangat berat (teknis)A full north-to-south traverse of all four summits — Pico Norte, La Cresta, Pico Central and Pico Sur — as documented by expedition teams (e.g. 2021). A technical, high-commitment objective for experienced alpinists only.
Climbing Experiences
Experiences on Nevado del Huila almost always take the form of a remote, demanding 3–5 day expedition. Recurring themes in these accounts: a long approach across páramo and Andean forest, coordination with the Nasa indigenous communities who govern the area, and travel over crevassed glaciers to one of the four summits (most often Pico Norte or Pico Central/Sur). Many Colombian videos highlight the pre-dawn summit push, harsh weather, and the meaning of this 'wild mountain' as a transformative experience in the heart of the Andes. Because the volcano reactivated (2007–2008) and access runs through indigenous territory, nearly every source stresses community permission and an experienced guide.
