Description

Nevado del Cumbal (4,764 m) is a twin-crater stratovolcano in the Nudo de los Pastos, Cumbal municipality, Nariño department, in southwestern Colombia (about 79 km from Pasto). Its summit holds two main craters — La Plazuela and Mundo Nuevo — and although it is still called a "nevado," its glaciers vanished around 1985 due to climate change; only seasonal snow patches and columns of gas and vapour from fumaroles remain. Its last significant eruption was in December 1926. Ascents usually leave before dawn from the town of Cumbal toward the hamlet of La Ortiga, then follow a bridle path and walking track through the páramo to the crater area, with a local guide since there is no official marked trail.

A full-day ascent gathering at the La Ortiga school: departing around 04:00, reaching the summit near midday and returning to base about 16:00. Pasto is roughly two hours away via Túquerres–Cumbal, and a guide is required as the area has no official visitor control.
