Description

The Nebelhorn (2,224 m) is a celebrated panoramic summit in the Allgäu Alps, directly above the resort town of Oberstdorf in Bavaria, Germany. Since 1930 the Nebelhornbahn cable car has carried visitors almost to the top, making it one of the most accessible Alpine viewpoints; the summit station opens onto a famous panorama over hundreds of peaks stretching from the Allgäu into the Austrian and Swiss ranges. For experienced walkers the Nebelhorn is the western gateway to the Hindelanger Klettersteig, a long, exposed ridge via ferrata toward the Großer Daumen that demands full gear and a head for heights. Valley hiking routes — for instance through the Oytal or across the Gaisalpseen — offer a full ascent for those who prefer not to take the lift. The name 'fog horn' reflects the changeable Allgäu weather. The mountain also hosts sport events, including the Nebelhorn Trophy figure-skating competition and winter freeride races.

Routes

Hindelanger Klettersteig (Nebelhorn → Großer Daumen)

Via ferrata sulit (B/C, terekspos) — perlengkapan lengkap wajib
±5–7 jam untuk keseluruhan traverse

One of the most famous via ferratas in the Allgäu Alps, starting right at the Nebelhorn summit area and following the jagged ridge toward the Großer Daumen. Cabled and laddered sections cross rock towers, notches and exposed edges; it demands a via-ferrata set, helmet, a head for heights and stable weather. Not for beginners and very dangerous when wet, foggy or during thunderstorms.

Nebelhornbahn ke stasiun puncak + jalur pendek ke puncak

Mudah (jalur wisata gunung)
±20 menit kereta gantung + 15–30 menit jalan kaki ke puncak

The most popular, easy option: ride the Nebelhornbahn from Oberstdorf to the Höfatsblick/summit station, then take a short marked path to the summit point and the panorama deck, which opens the famous view over hundreds of Alpine peaks. Suitable for families and casual walkers; mountain footwear is still advised as the upper ground is rocky.

Climbing Experiences

The Nebelhorn (2,224 m) above Oberstdorf has two faces: a relaxed viewpoint reached by the Nebelhornbahn cable car, and the gateway to the hard, exposed Hindelanger Klettersteig. The sources below document real experiences — full valley ascents, panoramic walks at the summit station, and via-ferrata POV footage along the ridge toward the Großer Daumen.
