Description

Naranjo de Bulnes (2,519 m), also known as Picu Urriellu in Asturian, is the most iconic limestone monolith in Spain and one of the most challenging rock faces in Europe. Rising within the Macizo Central of the Picos de Europa mountains in Asturias, Naranjo is a limestone obelisk more than 500 m tall from its base, cut nearly vertically on all sides — there is no 'hiking route' to its summit, as every approach is a technical rock climb. Pedro Pidal — Spanish nobleman and founding figure of Spain's nature conservation — together with mountain guide Gregorio Pérez 'El Cainejo' first reached the summit in 1904, making it one of the most historically significant ascents in Spanish alpinism. Today dozens of climbing routes exist across a wide range of grades, with the normal South Face (Cara Sur) at Grade IV–V being the most frequently attempted. Refugio Delgado Úbeda (1,960 m) at the foot of the wall serves as base camp for climbers approaching from Sotres. The tower is visible from the trekking paths surrounding it and represents the 'holy grail' for rock climbers across Europe.

Routes

The only normal route that reaches the summit of Naranjo de Bulnes without specialist gear beyond standard climbing equipment. The approach begins from Sotres (3–4 hours on foot) or from Caín via a circular trail to the Refugio Delgado Úbeda (1,960 m) at the foot of the south face. The south face is composed of mostly solid limestone (with some loose sections), offering good holds and foot placements but demanding climbing technique at Grade IV–V. The route consists of several pitches with some fixed anchors and paint markers. Descent is by abseil (rappel) down the same line or a more direct descent route. Refugio Úbeda is the main base camp and must be booked well in advance during the climbing season.
