Description

The Nadelhorn (4,327 m) is a four-thousander in the Pennine Alps of Switzerland and the highest point of the Nadelgrat, a north–south high-level ridge above the resort of Saas-Fee (to the east) and the Mattertal (to the west). Its three ridges meet in a sharp, needle-like summit; its name comes from the German 'Nadel' (needle) for how it looks from the north. The other summits on the Nadelgrat are the Stecknadelhorn, the Hohberghorn, the Dürrenhorn and the Lenzspitze. It was first climbed on 16 September 1858 by Franz Andenmatten, Baptiste Epiney, Aloys Supersaxo and J. Zimmermann. The normal route — the north-east ridge (Nordostgrat) from the Mischabelhütte — is regarded as one of the more aesthetic yet relatively accessible four-thousander high-tours in the Saas area, making it a popular 4,000 m objective for alpinists comfortable with glacier and ridge technique.

Routes

The normal route up the Nadelhorn (4,327 m) follows the north-east ridge (Nordostgrat) from the Mischabelhütte (~3,340 m) above Saas-Fee. From the hut, the route crosses the Hohbalm Glacier to the Windjoch, then follows an increasingly exposed snow-ice-and-blocky-rock ridge to the needle-sharp summit. It is usually done over two days with a night at the Mischabelhütte; the summit day is around 5–7 hours return. Glacier technique (crevasse protection), crampons and ice axe, and mixed-ridge experience are required. It is one of the more aesthetic yet relatively beginner-friendly four-thousanders in the Saas area.

Climbing Experiences

The Nadelhorn (4,327 m), the needle-sharp high point of the Nadelgrat above Saas-Fee, is usually climbed by the normal north-east ridge (Nordostgrat) route from the Mischabelhütte. The German/English/Italian videos below capture the approach across the Hohbalm Glacier, the snow-ice-rock ridge to the summit, and panoramas of the Mischabel group — all verified live via YouTube oEmbed.
