Hazards

Lereng granit berbatu dan berpasir yang licin serta minim naungan; panas dan risiko dehidrasi karena tidak ada fasilitas air di lokasi. Satwa liar di kawasan mencakup hiena, rubah, dan babi hutan. Dari sisi keamanan, FCDO Inggris menyarankan menghindari perjalanan yang tidak esensial ke tiga wilayah barat Somaliland termasuk Maroodi Jeex (tempat Hargeisa berada), dan kawasan luar kota dinilai kurang aman dibanding pusat kota — pakai pemandu lokal, jangan berjalan sendirian, dan periksa nasihat perjalanan terbaru. Tekanan urbanisasi cepat juga membuat sebagian lereng dijadikan lahan bangunan dan pertanian.

Description

Naasa Hablood — Naaso Hablood in Somali — is a pair of twin conical hills on the edge of Hargeisa, the de facto capital of Somaliland (a territory still internationally recognised as part of Somalia). The hills are made of granite and sand rather than volcanic rock, topping out around 1,410 m above sea level, only a few dozen metres above the Ogo highland valley in which Hargeisa sits. The name literally means "woman's breasts", after their distinctive conical silhouette; the popular rendering "Virgin's Breasts" is inaccurate, since the Somali root refers to a mature woman or mother. Documented since at least 1896, the hills are both a natural landmark and a fixture of Somali poetry and folklore. For Hargeisa residents and returning diaspora they are the easiest local outing: a 15-20 minute taxi or minibus ride from the centre, then a walk up open slopes for sweeping views over the city and surrounding plains, at their best around sunset. Wikipedia notes hiking is the easiest way to explore them; there are no waymarked trails and no entrance fee. The area also carries scientific value: surveys by the Horn Heritage Organization found scatters of stone artefacts pointing to a very long record of human presence, plus important habitat for dik-dik, monkeys, hyena, white-backed vultures and marabou storks. Facing pressure from rapid urban growth, the organisation is campaigning for protected recreational national park status — an idea backed by 77% of respondents in its community assessment.
