Description

Mwanihana is a forest-clad peak in Udzungwa Mountains National Park, Morogoro Region, south-central Tanzania, and the target of the park's best-known trekking route. Trekking operators generally give its height as about 2,150 m and describe it as the second-highest summit in the Udzungwa range, after Luhomero. Unlike Tanzania's iconic volcanoes such as Kilimanjaro or Meru, the Udzungwa belong to the Eastern Arc — a chain of ancient, eroded crystalline mountain blocks rather than volcanic cones. Their forests are among the most biodiverse in Africa, holding more than 2,500 plant species, endemic trees growing to around 30 m, and rare primates including the Udzungwa red colobus and mangabey. The roughly 38 km Mwanihana Trail is normally walked over three days and two nights: day one is about three hours through dense vegetation along a small river to Njia Panda Camp; day two climbs to the summit through thickening forest and steepening ground — often clambering over roots and fallen trunks — before returning to camp; day three descends to the trailhead. Elephants, buffalo, and antelope may be met along the way, which is why the park requires an accompanying ranger. At the foot of the range, the Sanje Waterfall, dropping some 310 m over three cascades, is a far more popular day hike and is often added at the end of the trek. The mix of montane rainforest, endemic wildlife, and near-total absence of crowds makes Mwanihana feel more like a forest expedition than a conventional summit climb.

Routes

Mwanihana Trail (3 hari / 2 malam, via Njia Panda Camp)

Berat
38.00 km 3 hari 2 malam

The main route to the Mwanihana summit (~2,150 m), about 38 km in total, starting at the gate of Udzungwa Mountains National Park. Day one is roughly three hours through dense vegetation along a small river — where the endemic red colobus are often heard — to Njia Panda Camp. Day two is the summit push: the vegetation thickens, the path steepens, and hikers frequently clamber over fallen trunks and roots before reaching the top and its views over the park, then return to camp by the same way. Day three descends to the trailhead. An accompanying ranger is required, as elephants, buffalo, and antelope are regularly met at altitude.

6.20 km ± setengah hari

A day route of about 6.2 km to the Sanje Waterfall, the highest in the region, dropping some 310 m over three cascades into the valley. It is the most popular route in Udzungwa Mountains National Park and is often scheduled as the finale of the Mwanihana trek, or taken by visitors who are not climbing the peak.

Climbing Experiences

Mwanihana (~2,150 m) is the main trekking summit of Udzungwa Mountains National Park in Morogoro, Tanzania — reached by the roughly 38 km Mwanihana Trail over three days and two nights, through Eastern Arc montane rainforest with an armed ranger. Documentation splits in two: the Mwanihana summit trek itself, and the far busier day hike to the Sanje Waterfall at the foot of the range.
