Description
Musala (2,925 m) is the highest peak in Bulgaria, the Balkans, and all of Central-Eastern Europe outside the Caucasus. Located in Rila National Park amid stunning glacial lakes, it is Bulgaria's most popular hiking destination. A meteorological station and relay antenna stand at its summit, making it easily recognizable. The mountain has ancient roots — its name is variously traced to Turkish 'Musa Allah' (Mountain of God) or pre-Slavic origins. The easiest ascent uses the gondola from Borovets ski resort to the Sitnyakovo plateau, then follows a rocky trail to the summit in a few hours. The classic route from the Musalenski Ezera area is longer but rewards hikers with views of the seven glacial 'Musalenski' lakes. Musala is an ideal goal for beginners who want to stand on the Balkans' highest point.

Recommended for hikers who want to experience the richest ecosystems of Rila National Park.

Climbing Experiences
Musala is Bulgaria's most popular peak and accessible to virtually any fit hiker. Two main options: take the gondola from Borovets up to Sitnyakovo then hike to the summit (~3 hours), or walk the full route from Borovets (~5–6 hours). A third route from the Musalenski Ezera area passes seven glacial lakes and is longer but far more scenic. Hikers note that the summit is often foggy and windy, and afternoon thunderstorms can develop rapidly — an early start is strongly advised. The meteorological station at the top adds a unique touch to the experience.
