Description

Mulhacén (3,479 m) is the highest mountain in mainland Spain and in the whole Iberian Peninsula, part of the Sierra Nevada range in Andalusia. It is named after Abu'l-Hasan Ali (Muley Hacén in Spanish), the penultimate Muslim ruler of 15th-century Granada who, by legend, was buried on its summit. The most common normal route climbs from the south via the village of Capileira in Las Alpujarras — many hikers use the national-park bus to Mirador de Trevélez or Hoya del Portillo, then follow a long ascending trail to the top. An alternative is a two-day climb staying at the Refugio Poqueira. Thanks to its altitude, the summit gives a vast panorama — on very clear days even toward the North African coast and the Rif mountains of Morocco.

Routes

Capileira → Refugio Poqueira → Puncak (dua hari)

Trek tinggi menengah; lebih nyaman untuk aklimatisasi
2 hari (bermalam di Refugio Poqueira 2.500 m)

A two-day southern variant: climb from Capileira/Las Alpujarras to the Refugio Poqueira (2,500 m) to overnight, then summit the next morning. It allows better acclimatisation and a shorter summit push from the hut.

Mirador de Trevélez (bus taman) → Puncak Mulhacén

Trek tinggi menengah; tanpa pemanjatan teknis, menuntut aklimatisasi
1 hari (±12–14 km, 6–8 jam pulang-pergi dari titik turun bus)

The most common normal route. Hikers take the national-park bus from Capileira to the Mirador de Trevélez (~2,700 m), then follow a long ascending trail across open slopes to the 3,479 m summit. The path is clear but long; altitude and sun exposure are the main challenges.

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Mulhacén (3,479 m) is a long high-altitude trek with no technical climbing on the normal route, though its 3,400 m-plus elevation demands fitness and acclimatisation. The most common approach is from the south via the village of Capileira in Las Alpujarras: many hikers use the national-park bus to Mirador de Trevélez or Hoya del Portillo, then follow a long trail to the summit — done either in one long day or over two days staying at the Refugio Poqueira (2,500 m). The videos and trip reports below capture the route from Capileira, a sunrise ascent, a fast-hiking option, and the wide panorama from the roof of the Iberian Peninsula.
