Description
Mount Williamson (~4,383 m) is the second-highest peak in California and the Sierra Nevada, just below Mount Whitney some 10 km to the south. It rises immediately east of the main Sierra Crest within the John Muir Wilderness, Inyo County, and is known for its massive eastern escarpment above the Owens Valley. Because it stands set back from the main crest, climbing it demands a long approach — the most popular route crosses Shepherd Pass (~3,670 m) and then traverses the Williamson Bowl, a basin of five alpine lakes and tiring boulder fields, before ascending a Class 3 gully and chimney to the summit plateau. The first recorded ascent was by W.L. Hunter and C. Mulholland in 1884. Though not technically extreme by the normal route, the combination of altitude, distance and boulder-field navigation makes Williamson one of California's most demanding fourteeners. Some access is also seasonally restricted to protect bighorn sheep habitat.

Routes
North Rib
Southeast Slopes via George Creek
West Face via Shepherd Pass (jalur standar)
Scrambling hingga Kelas 3Jalur paling populer.
Climbing Experiences
Climbing Mount Williamson typically uses the West Face route via Shepherd Pass: a long approach to the pass at ~3,670 m, a traverse of the alpine-lake-and-boulder Williamson Bowl, and a Class 3 gully and chimney to California's second-highest summit. Climbers' reports stress how physically hard, long and route-finding-intensive it is. The videos below document ascents via the West Face / Shepherd Pass and the final summit push.
