Description

Mount Victoria (4,038 m) is the highest point in the Owen Stanley Ranges and one of the seven highest peaks in Papua New Guinea, standing in Central Province roughly 75 km north-northeast of Port Moresby — visible from the harbour city on clear days. It was named for Queen Victoria by the British naval officer Commander Charles B. Yule, who first surveyed the area. The first recorded European ascent was made on 17 May 1889 by British New Guinea Administrator Sir William MacGregor, who approached from the west via the Vanapa River. Since then, ascents have been extremely rare: by 2017 only six expeditions had reached the summit. A typical journey takes about 12 days from Kanga Village (roughly 10 km northwest of Kokoda), passing through a dramatic sequence of lowland rainforest, mid-mountain forest, sub-alpine grassland, and alpine terrain, with two glacial lakes at around 3,600 m. The challenges include narrow knife-edge ridges, towering tree roots, persistent mud and rain, enveloping mist and fog, and sub-alpine temperatures approaching 0 °C at higher campsites.

Routes

Ekspedisi Puncak via Desa Kanga (dari Kokoda) — Rute Standar

Sangat sulit (ekspedisi teknis): tanpa infrastruktur wisata, wajib porter & pemandu
±12 hari (pulang-pergi); ±6 hari naik, ±5 hari turun + 1 hari summit

Rute MacGregor Historis (via Sungai Vanapa)

Referensi historis

Trek 7-Hari (Rute Disingkat via No Roads Expeditions)

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Mount Victoria (4,038 m) in Papua New Guinea is one of the most challenging and rare trekking expeditions in the southwest Pacific. Since the first ascent by William MacGregor in 1889, only about six expeditions had reached the summit by 2017. The typical journey takes roughly 12 days from Kanga Village (about 10 km northwest of Kokoda), ascending through hot, humid lowland rainforest, into mid-mountain forest dominated by tree ferns, then across sub-alpine grasslands and narrow knife-edge ridges at altitude. Above 3,600 m lie two rare glacial lakes. Trip reports describe constant mud, thick mist, near-freezing temperatures at the highest camps, and the extraordinary reward of seeing both coastlines of Papua New Guinea on a clear summit day.
