Kepulauan Solomon (SB)
Location / Range
Kolombangara Island, Western Province, Solomon Islands — about 200 km northwest of Guadalcanal

Volcanic?
Yes — volcano
Coordinates
-7.9500, 157.0750
Difficulty
Hard — a 2–3 day expedition from Imbu Rano Lodge (370 m) to the crater rim and then to the summit, through dense rainforest and moss forest; a steep trail to the summit with no formal infrastructure
Best Season
The relatively dry season (May–October). The Solomon Islands have a wet tropical climate year-round — trail conditions are better in these months
Permits & Rules
Access is through the Kolombangara conservation area managed by the Kolombangara Island Biodiversity Conservation Association (KIBCA). Climbers must stay at the Imbu Rano Lodge or an area managed by KIBCA and use the local guides provided; an entry fee for the conservation area applies
Hazards
Very steep volcano slopes leading to the crater rim and summit, dense and muddy forest, endemic animals (including insects), unpredictable tropical weather with sudden heavy rain, remoteness with limited access (only by sea route to the island)

Description

Mount Veve (1,770 m) is the highest point of Kolombangara Island, an almost perfectly circular volcano in the Western Province of the Solomon Islands. The entire island is a single large volcano: a cone truncated by a 4 km-wide crater at its summit, surrounded by four peaks on the crater rim — Veve being the highest, followed by Tepalamenggatu (1,708 m), Rano (1,698 m), and Mbatuvana. Seen from the sea Kolombangara appears as a near-perfect green cone, reminiscent of Mount Fuji in a tropical setting. The island is renowned for its biodiversity: montane and mossy forest above 700 m shelters birds endemic only to Kolombangara, including the Kolombangara White-eye, as well as endemic frogs and orchids. The 28% conservation area is managed by KIBCA, which also operates Imbu Rano Lodge at 370 m — the only accommodation and the departure point for trekking. Reaching Mount Veve requires roughly one day to the crater rim (Mt Tepalamenggatu) plus another half day to the summit itself, climbing through humid cloud and moss forest. Kolombangara can only be reached by sea from Gizo, the Western Province hub.

Routes

Rute Birdwatching: Imbu Rano Lodge → Punggungan Kawah → Zona Endemik (tanpa summit push)

Rute Utama: Imbu Rano Lodge → Rim Kawah (Mt Tepalamenggatu) → Mount Veve

Climbing Experiences

Experiences on Kolombangara split between summiting Mount Veve and trekking to the crater rim. Almost all accounts depart from Imbu Rano Lodge (370 m) operated by KIBCA, walking through lowland forest before entering increasingly humid and muddy montane forest. Recurring themes: the beauty of mossy cloud forest at altitude, the astonishing presence of endemic birds (especially the Kolombangara White-eye above 700 m), steep trails to the crater rim, and extraordinary tranquillity in the caldera and summit cloud forest. Many visitors come as birdwatchers or naturalists rather than peak-baggers. Access to Kolombangara from Gizo is described as a short boat journey adding an expedition flavour to visiting the remote island.
