Description

Mount Usborne (705 m) on East Falkland is the highest point of the Falkland Islands, just 5 metres taller than Mount Adam on West Falkland. Its summit rises about 53 km west of Stanley in the Wickham Heights. Rather than a technical climb, Usborne is an open cross-country walk over boggy peat and tussock grass with no formal trail, so self-navigation and readiness for the fast-changing South Atlantic weather matter most. The mountain also has a footnote in military history as a radar orientation point during the first Black Buck raid in 1982. Access is typically by 4x4 off the Stanley–Darwin road, followed by a walk through boggy terrain to the summit ridge.

Usborne umumnya didaki sebagai perjalanan sehari dari berbagai permukiman. Karena melintasi lahan peternakan (estancia) swasta, izin/permission sebaiknya diminta lebih dulu (mis. lewat koordinator pengembangan wisata FLH). Medannya menyeberangi stone runs; tak ada rute teknis, tetapi cuaca Atlantik Selatan dan angin yang berubah cepat menuntut kesiapan lebih.

Rute lingkar ~20,7 km (naik-turun ~967 m, titik tertinggi ~702 m) yang lazim dipakai: dari kawasan jalan Stanley–Darwin, tempuh jalur off-road kasar dengan Land Rover/4x4 ke dekat kaki gunung, lalu berjalan kaki menembus moorland berawa (rumput putih, gambut, diddle-dee) dan hamparan 'stone runs' hingga dataran puncak. Tak ada penanda jalur, sehingga navigasi mandiri dan kesiapan angin kencang jadi kunci. Variasi jalur juga melewati dua situs reruntuhan pesawat sisa perang 1982.
