Description

Mount Twynam (2,195 m) is the third-highest peak on mainland Australia, rising on the Main Range of Kosciuszko National Park in the NSW Snowy Mountains, about 8 km northeast of Mount Kosciuszko. It stands above the Blue Lake cirque and forms the watershed between the Snowy River and the Geehi River. Despite its height it is a relatively unimposing, rarely climbed summit — usually reached as a day walk from Charlotte Pass along the Main Range walking track (a ~22 km, 7–9 hour, NPWS Grade 4 loop) past Hedley Tarn and Blue Lake, then detouring off-track over the alpine tops to the summit marker. Conditions are best from early summer through autumn; in winter the range is snow-covered and demands alpine skills.

Routes

Main Range walking track (loop Charlotte Pass) + detour puncak Twynam

Grade 4 (skala NPWS) untuk Main Range track; bagian puncak Twynam off-track
22.00 km 7–9 jam (loop penuh)

The main ~22 km loop from Charlotte Pass, the usual way to reach Mount Twynam. It passes Hedley Tarn and the Blue Lake cirque (the standard version also takes in Mount Kosciuszko). The Twynam summit itself lies just off the main track, near the Carruthers Peak junction, reached by a short off-track detour over the alpine tops. NPWS grades the track Grade 4; be ready for off-track navigation and fast-changing alpine weather.

Climbing Experiences

Experiences of Mount Twynam are almost always day walks from Charlotte Pass on the Kosciuszko Main Range. Vlogs and trip reports describe a route past Hedley Tarn and the Blue Lake cirque, then an off-track detour to the Twynam summit marker — often combined with Little Twynam, Mount Sentinel, or even Australia's three highest peaks (Kosciuszko, Townsend, Twynam) in one loop. Recurring themes are the beautiful but unmarked open alpine tops near the summit, fast-changing weather, and glacial-lake scenery. Some hike it as a long full-day loop, others as part of a two-day multi-peak adventure.
