Description

Mount Travers (2,338 m) is one of the dominant peaks of Nelson Lakes National Park on New Zealand's South Island, rising at the head of the Travers Valley and forming the backdrop to the popular Travers-Sabine Circuit. Its true summit is an alpine objective for experienced mountaineers, while most visitors follow the valley track to Upper Travers Hut and cross Travers Saddle (Poukirikiri, ~1,787 m) at the mountain's foot — one of the circuit's most memorable sections. The area is renowned for its beech forest, Blue Lake (reportedly the world's clearest freshwater, per NIWA research), and wild alpine scenery.

Routes

Lembah Travers ke Upper Travers Hut & Travers Saddle

Menengah–berat — jalur lembah lalu tanjakan alpine ke pelana
2–3 hari pulang-pergi

The core section of the circuit, doable as a stand-alone trip: up the beech-forested Travers Valley to Upper Travers Hut, with the option to climb to Travers Saddle for direct views of Mount Travers' flanks before returning. A good way to experience the mountain without the full traverse.

Berat — tramping alpine berpengalaman; penyeberangan sungai & Travers Saddle terekspos
4–7 hari

The classic multi-day Nelson Lakes circuit that loops around Mount Travers. From St Arnaud / Lake Rotoiti it follows the Travers Valley to Upper Travers Hut, then climbs over Travers Saddle (Poukirikiri) at the mountain's foot before descending to West Sabine and (optionally) a side trip to Blue Lake. It demands fitness, river-crossing skills, and alpine weather awareness.

Climbing Experiences

Experiences on Mount Travers almost always relate to the Travers-Sabine Circuit in Nelson Lakes National Park: up the Travers Valley to Upper Travers Hut, over Travers Saddle at the mountain's foot, then on to West Sabine and Blue Lake. The videos and trip reports below include multi-day circuit records, an official alpine safety guide to Travers Saddle, and accounts of the summit climb itself via Summit Creek.
