- Massif granit (non-vulkanik) — lereng atas tertutup pasir kuarsa hasil pelapukan
- Volcanic?
- No (non-volcanic)
- Coordinates
- -45.6620, 167.5180
- Difficulty
- Berat / lanjutan.
- Best Season
- Musim panas sampai awal musim gugur (Desember–April); operator berpemandu hanya menjalankan trip Desember–Februari.
Description
Mount Titiroa (1,715 m) stands in northern Southland on the eastern edge of Fiordland National Park near the Te Anau Basin, a landmark plainly visible from Te Anau township. Its oddity is its colour: the mountain is built of white granite, and exfoliation weathering of that granite yields coarse, pale quartz sand together with strangely shaped boulders and tors. From a distance the upper slopes look like snow that never melts, even in midsummer. The summit area is nicknamed "Geiger's Garden" for those exfoliation boulders. It sits south and south-east of Lake Manapouri, in the Hunter Mountains block between Hope Arm (Lake Manapouri) to the north and the Borland Burn / Borland Road to the south. The standard approach runs from Hope Arm up the Garnock Burn; summit views take in Lake Manapouri and Lake Rakatu. Fiordland itself is one of four parks making up the Te Wāhipounamu – South West New Zealand World Heritage Area, inscribed in 1990 and covering some 2.6 million hectares. Access starts at Manapouri village, Pearl Harbour (Jetty 14), 21 km from Te Anau on SH95. The Waiau River must be crossed — by water taxi in summer, by hired dinghy, or by kayak/packraft; some parties instead paddle across Lake Manapouri to the head of Hope Arm in about two hours rather than walking two to three. The first night is usually at Hope Arm Hut (Standard category, 12 bunks), with Back Valley Hut 1–1.5 hours further. From the south, Borland Road from Borland Lodge, Monowai (about 67 km from Te Anau) leads to the North Borland Track, a limestone rock bivvy and North Borland Hut — Wikipedia calls this North Branch Borland side the easiest climbing route. Other commonly used camps: the Hope Arm beach, the Garnock Burn flats, the Snow White tussock clearings, a saddle around 1,100 m with a reliable trickle of water, and an unnamed tarn some 200 m below the summit. Above the Snow White Clearings everything is untracked and unmarked. The climb means roughly 1,250 m of steep, bluffy forest before breaking out onto a ridge of quartz-rich granite tors, tussock and white sand fields where progress becomes two steps forward, one step back. Club parties therefore allow four to five days for the Hope Arm–summit–Borland traverse, while fast parties push it in two or three.

Routes
Hope Arm → Garnock Burn → puncak (rute baku, pulang-pergi)
Berat / lanjutan — di atas Hope Arm butuh kebugaran di atas rata-rata dan keterampilan navigasi backcountryThe standard line starts by crossing the Waiau River from Pearl Harbour, Manapouri, by water taxi, dinghy or kayak, then walking in to Hope Arm Hut. The next day follows the Snow White Clearings and the Garnock Burn before leaving every marked track behind: an untracked climb over Pt785 and Pt1017 onto the main ridge, where white quartz sand and granite tors take over. High camps are usually at a saddle around 1,100 m with a trickle of water, or at a bivvy near Pt1412. Some parties instead paddle to the head of Hope Arm (about 2 hours) rather than walking 2–3, then reckon roughly 14 hours return from Hope Arm to the summit.
Route Segments
- 1
Pearl Harbour (Manapouri) → Hope Arm Hut
Hope Arm Hut: kategori Standard, 12 ranjang, berbayar. Pantai Hope Arm terkenal banyak sandfly.
- 2
Hope Arm Hut → bivak Pt1412 (via Garnock Burn Saddle & Snow White Clearings)
- 4
Puncak → Pearl Harbour (turun & keluar)
Turun lewat jalur naik; bagian pasir cepat tapi hutan bawahnya melelahkan dan mudah salah arah.
Pendekatan selatan North Borland Burn (dari Borland Road)
Berat, tapi disebut sisi termudah untuk mencapai puncak — tetap tanpa penanda di atas hutanThe alternative that avoids the Lake Manapouri crossing entirely. From Borland Lodge, Monowai (about 67 km from Te Anau, 120 km from Invercargill via the Southern Scenic Route), the track crosses the Borland Burn swingbridge, reaches the South Borland Track junction in roughly 1 hour 45, then 45 minutes on the North Borland Track to a limestone rock bivvy, about 15 minutes more to the Middle Branch ford, and some 30 minutes from the clearing to North Borland Hut. The summit push goes untracked from the hut the following day. Wikipedia calls the North Branch Borland side the easiest climbing route; the main hazard is the unbridged Middle Branch, which rises fast in heavy rain.
Route Segments
- 1
Borland Lodge → persimpangan South Borland Track
Menyeberangi jembatan gantung Borland Burn.
- 2
Persimpangan → rock bivvy batu gamping → arungan Middle Branch
Rock bivvy punya toilet cubluk tapi hanya untuk darurat. Middle Branch tanpa jembatan — DOC meminta kehati-hatian ekstrem karena muka air bisa naik cepat.
- 3
Clearing → North Borland Hut → puncak
Traverse Titiroa: Hope Arm → puncak → Borland Road
Sangat berat — hanya untuk pendaki lanjutan; bush-bashing tanpa jalur, navigasi GPS, butuh dua kendaraanThe most popular through-trip: cross from Manapouri, take the Circle Track to Hope Arm Hut, climb the Snow White Clearing Track and the Garnock Burn, bush-bash untracked to the ridgeline, top out at 1,715 m, then descend the north ridge to North Borland Hut and out to Borland Lodge on Borland Road. Around 40 km with some 2,500 m of cumulative gain, the first day carrying the bulk of it (about 1,660 m). It demands a car shuttle or a second vehicle between Manapouri and Borland Lodge, and high-camp water can dry up in summer.
Route Segments
- 1
Manapouri → Hope Arm Hut (Circle Track)
Penyeberangan Sungai Waiau dengan perahu, lalu jalur bertanda.
- 2
Hope Arm → Garnock Burn → punggungan → puncak
Bagian tanpa penanda; klub NOTMC melewatinya lewat Pt785–Pt1017 dan punggungan utara, dengan scrambling tor granit.
- 3
Puncak → North Borland Hut → Borland Lodge
Climbing Experiences
Titiroa trip reports repeat a single pattern. The trip almost always begins with a water crossing — water taxi, dinghy, kayak or packraft from Pearl Harbour, Manapouri — then an easy 2.5-hour walk to Hope Arm before the real work. That real work is roughly 1,250 m of untracked climbing through steep, bluffy, treefall-strewn forest, which a Peninsula Tramping Club party summed up in the line other trampers keep quoting: "no markers but plenty of foot-trails". Above the bushline everyone talks about the same thing — white quartz sand. Some call it a giant dune above the bush, two steps forward and one back, quads burning; others describe granite tor ridges, tussock with tiny alpine flowers, and a moonscape that does not feel like New Zealand. Wind decides success: one party turned around below 1,600 m in roughly 80 km/h gusts, while others got clear skies, cloud inversions and hard-edged sunrises. Many turn it into a traverse out to Borland rather than retracing their steps, and nearly all stress GPS navigation and a PLB, since there is next to no phone reception.
