Description
Mount Taveuni is an elongated, dormant shield volcano that forms the backbone of Taveuni Island, Fiji's 'Garden Island'. Its ridge is dotted with about 150 volcanic cones; its highest peak, Uluigalau (1,241 m / 4,072 ft), is Fiji's second-highest summit, while Des Vœux Peak (about 1,195 m) is next in height and the most popular peak to climb. At around 800 m sits Lake Tagimaucia, a crater lake that is one of Fiji's most famous attractions and the only habitat of the rare tagimaucia flower. The island also holds the Bouma National Heritage Park with its celebrated Bouma/Tavoro waterfalls and the Lavena Coastal Walk, and is crossed by the 180th meridian (the date line). Hiking on Taveuni generally splits in two: climbing Des Vœux Peak by a dirt road from Somosomo for island panoramas and sunrises, or trekking through humid, muddy rainforest to Lake Tagimaucia. Because parts of the routes cross customary land and heritage park, using a village guide and respecting local custom is strongly advised.

Routes
Des Vœux Peak (jalan tanah dari Somosomo)
Menengah — jalan tanah menanjak yang jelas namun panjang dan sering berlumpurTaveuni's most popular viewpoint peak (about 1,195 m, the island's second highest after Uluigalau). Reached by a climbing dirt road from Somosomo — some drive part way by 4WD then walk. Often hiked before dawn for sunrise and island panoramas out to the surrounding sea; the summit is frequently in cloud, so timing and weather matter greatly.
SourceTrek Danau Tagimaucia (danau kawah ±800 m)
Sulit — trek hutan hujan pegunungan yang lembap, berlumpur, dan lebatA rainforest trek to Lake Tagimaucia, a crater lake at about 800 m that is the only habitat of the rare tagimaucia flower and one of Fiji's most famous attractions. The trail is humid, muddy, and dense, so it is commonly done with a village guide; it crosses customary land, so respect local etiquette and the sevusevu offering.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Hiking on Taveuni splits neatly into two main draws, and travellers' accounts reflect it. The first is Des Vœux Peak (about 1,195 m): reached by a climbing dirt road from Somosomo, often hiked before dawn for sunrise and island panoramas out to the surrounding sea, sometimes in cloud. The second is the rainforest trek to Lake Tagimaucia, a crater lake at about 800 m that is the habitat of the rare tagimaucia flower — accounts highlight muddy, humid, dense tropical-montane trail, so a village guide is common. Recurring themes: the beauty of the 'Garden Island' with the nearby Bouma waterfalls and Lavena Coastal Walk, the humidity and mud that demand preparation, and the etiquette of respecting customary land and the heritage park.
