Description

Mount Takao (599 m) rises on the western edge of Tokyo and is described as the world's most-visited mountain, drawing roughly three million people a year — most arriving by direct train from the city and hiking up in one to two hours. Despite its modest height, Takao is far more than a city park: its slopes hold a species-rich mixed forest, the roughly 1,200-year-old Buddhist temple Yakuo-in steeped in Tengu lore, and views of Mount Fuji from the western ridge on clear days. Seven official trails climb from the base: Trail 1 (Omotesando), 3.8 km and fully paved, lined with food stalls, shrines and restrooms; Trail 6 (Biwa), which follows a stream past a waterfall used for ascetic training; and the Inariyama Trail, a ridge route over Mount Inari that is considered the most physically demanding. A cable car and chairlift cut out the lower section for families and older visitors. The area is protected as Meiji no Mori Takao Quasi-National Park, and managers enforce a no-bins policy: all rubbish must be carried home.

Routes

Jalur 1 — Omotesando (jalur utama)

Mudah–sedang; 3,8 km, beraspal penuh
±110 menit naik / 90 menit turun berjalan kaki; ±60 menit naik / 50 menit turun bila memakai kereta kabel

The main and busiest trail, paved from Takaosanguchi Station all the way to the summit. It passes the cable car station, the monkey park, Yakuo-in Temple, food stalls and restrooms — the most family-friendly route and also the most crowded during the autumn foliage season. The cable car or chairlift cuts out the lower section for those with children or older companions.

Route Segments

Jalur 6 — Biwa Waterfall (menyusuri aliran air)

Berat menurut klasifikasi resmi; 3,3 km, jalur tepi sungai berbatu
±90 menit naik / 60 menit turun

A shaded route following a stream valley past Biwa waterfall, which is used as an ascetic training site. The rocks are often wet and slippery and some sections step through the streambed — a refreshing choice in summer, but one that demands extra care after rain.

Jalur Inariyama (punggungan lewat Gunung Inari)

Berat menurut klasifikasi resmi; 3,2 km jalur tanah dan tangga
±90 menit naik / 60 menit turun

The ridge route that most feels like real mountain hiking: dirt, roots and long stair sections, with no food stalls. It passes Mount Inari and the Azumaya lookout, which opens onto Hachioji and, on clear days, the Shinjuku skyline. Proper hiking shoes are strongly advised, especially after rain.

Route Segments

  1. 1

    Takaosanguchi → Gunung Inari

Tanjakan awal langsung dari kaki gunung

  2. 2

Climbing Experiences

Hiking Takao is almost always a day trip from central Tokyo: a train from Shinjuku to Takaosanguchi, then a trail chosen to match your energy. Trail 1 (Omotesando) is 3.8 km of pavement lined with food stalls, shrines and restrooms — many hikers shorten it with the cable car or chairlift. Those after a real mountain feel usually take the Inariyama Trail along the ridge over Mount Inari, or Trail 6 following the stream past Biwa waterfall. On a clear day the summit opens onto Mount Fuji, and hikers wanting more continue along the Oku-Takao ridge toward Mount Jinba. One rule the managers stress: there are no bins, so everything you bring goes home with you.
