Description
Mount Tahat (3,003 m) is the highest peak in Algeria and one of the most dramatic summits in the central Sahara. Standing at the heart of the Hoggar (Ahaggar) Mountains in Tamanrasset Province, Tahat is an ancient volcanic rock massif rising from a stony desert (reg) and frozen lava fields. The town of Tamanrasset (~56 km south) is the expedition starting point. The standard 4–7 day trek usually passes the famous Assekrem plateau — home to Father Charles de Foucauld's historic hermitage — before ascending Tahat via steep rocky slopes. Tourism gradually resumed around 2023 after roughly a decade of closure. Though technically non-demanding (no ice equipment needed), the primary challenge is Saharan remoteness: no official trails, temperatures swinging from freezing nights to scorching days, and no emergency services. An experienced Tuareg guide is an absolute necessity.

Routes
Pendekatan langsung dari Tamanrasset (rute singkat dengan 4WD lebih jauh)
Sedang (versi lebih singkat jika kendaraan 4WD mampu menjangkau lebih dekat ke basis puncak)A more compact version — some expeditions use specialized 4WD vehicles to push past Assekrem and approach Tahat's lower slopes to around 2,100–2,200 m elevation. This cuts 1–2 days compared to the classic route. From the drop-off point, the summit trek is similar: 3–4 hours over unmarked rocky terrain. This option still requires a Tuareg guide and high-clearance 4WD. Total duration (including transfers) is approximately 2–3 days from Tamanrasset.
SourceTamanrasset → Assekrem → Tahat Summit (rute klasik penuh)
Sedang–Sulit (non-teknis; terrain berbatu lepas, tidak ada jalur resmi, gain ±1.000 m dari area Assekrem; suhu ekstrem)The most common route starts from Tamanrasset town (~1,400 m elevation), crossing the Hoggar lava plateau by 4WD for 1–2 days to reach Assekrem (~2,780 m) — a high plateau famous for Charles de Foucauld's hermitage and iconic sunrise views among dramatic volcanic formations. From the Assekrem camp, climbers begin the foot trek to Tahat. The route is unmarked, navigating between phonolite and rough granite formations, ascending steep rocky slopes near the top before reaching the summit (3,003 m). The summit offers 360° panoramas of the Hoggar landscape. A Tuareg guide is essential for navigation. Descent is via the same route.

Climbing Experiences
Climbing Tahat (3,003 m) is an expedition into the heart of the central Sahara — a multi-day journey across the stunning Hoggar volcanic plateau, past Charles de Foucauld's hermitage at Assekrem, to reach the roof of Algeria. Climbers highlight the absolute silence of the desert, the panoramas of lava frozen into dramatic shapes, and the deep Tuareg cultural hospitality. The area reopened to international tourism around 2023 after nearly a decade of closure.
